RE: Double murder on papaya farms road - Durian Fiend - 05-28-2026 Chitta, the 79 year old man bludgeoned to death, was impressively self reliant, striving to live entirely off his 3 acres. He had no car, no doctor and no teeth. RE: Double murder on papaya farms road - HiloJulie - 05-28-2026 4th body discovered in Hilo, being investigated as murder, however, reported as not connected. Police Investigating Hilo Murder, No Indication of Connection to Puna Homicides – Hawaiʻi Police Department WOW. Just wow. RE: Double murder on papaya farms road - HiloJulie - 05-29-2026 Just got a Hawaii County Text - They got him. Arrested at 2:45PM RE: Double murder on papaya farms road - punikahakaiferret - 05-29-2026 Just came here to say that. Per my HPD phone alert: "Hawaii County: Update #4: as of 2:45 p.m. 5/28/26: Hawai i Island police report that 36 y.o. Jacob Daniel Baker of Phoa has been arrested." Surprised they got him alive, really. But definitely a relief for everyone. RE: Double murder on papaya farms road - BlackAkita - 05-29-2026 The suspect is lucky to be alive. From the news conference, we could tell that the captain and chief were visibly angry at the outlaw, thief and killer. Troublemakers need to beware of law enforcement in the future. The state should assign a wookie attorney to be his public defender. Better yet, get a complete confession from the lawbreaker, and ship him to a prison on the mainland. Beating up a kupuna should be a federal crime. RE: Double murder on papaya farms road - leilanidude - 05-29-2026 ship him to a prison on the mainland ---------- I have long advocated this would be a better deterrent than keeping them in Hawaii. With the high costs incurred in Hawaii for incarceration, I suspect it is much cheaper (but would anger the corrections unions) to pay a mainland for-profit prison. Keeps the prisoner isolated, no family able to visit and when let out, don't provide a plane ticket back. Yes, why not increase the already high percentage of recidivism to 100%, with no family, no familiarity with their surroundings? Potential employers looking on them as strangers in a strange land? No place to live, no job, what could go right? I wouldn’t go so far as to make excuses for convicted criminals, even calling those with multiple felonies simply “brash” rather than acknowledge their actions which may include tax evasion, perjury on legal documents, even criminal acts against women, just because the reputation of others where they live might accurately be labeled “brash” but I have seen social media posts in Hawaii argue that their former classmates were such good people when they knew them in high school, it was probably just one bad decision, etc. I suppose everyone is willing to ignore the bad in a person as long as they recognize some good, or a benefit to themselves personally that they find helpful. Equal justice anyone? RE: Double murder on papaya farms road - ChunksterK - 05-29-2026 I've always thought that our propensity to ship inmates to Arizona was one of the many reasons our criminal justice system is so ineffective. The judges, who are already way too lenient, regularly hesitate to hand out appropriately long sentences because of the distance and separation from the limted family and community resources these characters have. Building more prisons here in the islands might give the inept judges one less reason for light sentences, but every time that gets proposed, the NIMBY chorus goes very loud. Also, our state government is so inefficient when it comes to building and operating such facilities that the cost would be exponentially higher to do it here. "Out of sight, out of mind" isn't a good concept for criminal justice reform, but that's what we've got. Accountability for incompetent judges is a great concept, but don't hold your breath on that one. |
