RE: How bad is a cinder driveway? - Guest - 07-27-2008

Hope...

Please don't find this post offensive.

Living with an indoor/outdoor dog here in Hawaii may be a bit different then living with an indoor/outdoor dog in SD.

We have 4 dogs.... 2 at our house and 2 at the farm.

The "domesticated dogs" stay outside of our House.... these are the yippers that tell us someone is driving up the driveway.... we have a cement/concrete driveway and we still won't allow these dogs inside.

The other two dogs... don't really even have names other then "Girlyboy and Boy" and they remain up at the farm about 5 miles from our residence just to scare off the pigs and other night creatures that might lurk around our farm...including people.

Having dogs in Hawaii is much different then in the mainland for some people.

And once again Hope... please don't consider the following comment an insult....

If/When you bring your dog here to Hawaii... and you do intend your boxer to be an indoor/outdoor dog.... DAILY CLEANING of the floors will become a must no matter what type of flooring you have.

Hawaii's climate is just that way.... Unless you can train your dog to stay only on Concrete... floors just tend to get real messy if you have an indoor/outdoor dog. [:X]

my japanese grandmother would be shocked knowing that we walk around the house with slippers. well, that's because we are only a block from the beach and most of kailua, o'ahu is sand, sand, sand. did i mention sand. the dogs track in everything as they are indoor/outdoor. we don't have a problem with the floors getting ruined as the entire house is tiled.

i've done a couple of driveways, first put down cinder(black)drove on it till compacted, then 3/4 minus washed gravel rock, once compacted makes for a solid driveway

Thank you, loffelkopffl.Just curious-why the the gravel is called 3/4 minus and "washed"?

RE: How bad is a cinder driveway? - DanielP - 07-29-2008

3/4 minus is a crushed and screened product.3/4" refers to the largest size of the aggregate in the mix. It goes thru a screen to sort size. "Minus" means that there is not a second screen to take out the "fines" and thus allows all of the material that is smaller than 3/4" to be included in the mix.

If you ordered, say, 1" crushed, the mix would be put through a 1" screen to remove larger material and then a 3/4" screen to remove the smaller(fines) material, thus leaving just the 1" material.

If your going to use any sort of hardwood flooring...

SAY FAR AWAY FROM CINDERS!!!!

it will only take a small piece to destroy it.. cinders will always get tracked inside your home and will inevitably get stuck under a door!

When the door opens... SCRATCH!!!!!!! [}Smile]

Ive seen it 100's of times.

It's discussions like this (scratched flooring, cleaning, etc) that make me so happy that I just have the plywood subflooring and a few mats. I don't do housework so I keep it simple and rustic (some would say unfinished). We have long cinder driveways but I've never noticed it tracking into the house. Maybe climbing the steep stairs to get to the entry helps schlep off the cinder. or maybe I'm not looking.

We have a red cinder driveway, a 50 lb dog that sleeps inside, bamboo floors, and after over a year I don't see any problems. One new comment on the cinder is that it is much easier to walk on barefoot than the 1" rock. There is grass in front of one door and a sidewalk in front of the other with doormats so that probably helps with the dog. It's also post & pier so you walk across a few feet of deck before entering the house. Shoes tend to stay outside. I will sometimes pick up a small grain of cinder underfoot but moving furniture around is the only thing that seems mark the floor. We sweep the floor weekly.
Drainage can be a problem with cinder in that it doesn't stay in place on even a slight slope in heavy rain because water runs over it and will push it around while the 1" rock will let it drain through.
