Dang... RE: Let me make this perfectly clear.... - EightFingers - 06-22-2009 I'm a moderator on a fairly large forum (50,000+ members) and the job is not easy - you gotta be tough and when you finally have to enforce the rules you look like an a**. It's tricky in that this enforcement can serve to drive some people away and more or less "homogenize' the forum as a whole. This can result moving toward boring (expected) responses and mundane postings -the forum then lacks "color". There comes an over-riding "fear" of breaking the rules and now you will get people who "ride the line" and enjoy seeing how close they can get to the edge without "falling off". The "forum evolution" another poster is right on - I've seen it myself. People get banned from one forum only to form another. As far as I'm concerned there is nothing wrong with it - you don't like my sandbox, go build your own. What I DON'T like are people from one forum sniping at people on other forums. Cross-forum "wars" never end well. I will immediately ban from the forum I'm on anyone that makes fun of someone who has been banned and reprimanded by me. Rob, Don't take this as me telling how how to do your job and run your forum, 'cause it isn't. I'm just talking about my experience FWIW. I enjoy this forum a LOT and I have learned a LOT baout Hawai'i in general and Puna in particular. I hope to continue to contribute at least in a small way here. |
