Cafe Pesto is good and has a vibrant ambiance. For a quiet, intimate, elegant ambiance and excellent food, Kilauea Lodge would be my choice. The prices are a bit high, but not exorbitant.

Kathy, if there are more than two of you, you can request the booth in the back and it is not at all noisy. It is actually quite private. The two window seats are very soft comfy leather chairs... and that often where we sit, but the view is so gross there unless you are into watching a Walmart parking lot. It is a shame that they do not move to a better location. They would have been great in the Kaikodo Building. Their chef is the most innovative in Hilo IMHO. By the way, they are featuring Big Island Red Veal this month... mmm!

Blake, you crack me up. Your wine was a lovely addition to the party! I love to try other people's food, it is a treat for me actually. I am sure when you and Lynn are living here full time we will have some great dinner parties. [Big Grin]

Loretta, The Coconut Grill is no more expensive than the others listed, and it is quite affordable at lunch (around $9 with free salad bar this month.) But for dinner most of the better entrees are about $18-$25. If you get cocktails/wine and appetizers and desert, it can add up. Their ambiance is not as nice as the Hilo Ponds across the street, and neither is the service. I would not rank it as a true special occasion place, but I would say it is a fairly good restaurant. To me it has a slightly better than coffee shop atmosphere.

We are going to have to make a trek up to Volcano and try Kilauea Lodge, it is one place we have not ventured to. Does anyone know if they have a nice Sunday Brunch? We do like to go up to Volcano for the Sunday farmer's market on occasion.

Wow, i agree with Devany....lots of interesting places but not sooo special at least for east hawaii..

my votes for fun eating events include:

high tea/ or dinner at the hawaiian vanilla company
afternoon tea at the onomea tea company
dinner at kaleos when they have entertainers
hilo bay cafe

any dinner invite at Devany Davidson's homeSmile

How about the Ohana Grill opening in the Kaikodo building on Monday? Their showcase night is on Black & White Night, Nov. 6. Supposed to be excellent menu in a beautiful atmosphere. Nov. is BYOB as liquor license won't be in until Dec. 3rd.

The jury is out on the Ohana Grill till they have been open a while. It will be interesting to see what they do in that beautiful space. At least we will have a new place to try! Too bad they will not have their license till after Black and White Night.

I second one of Noel's suggestions "dinner at kaleos when they have entertainers". When we were on the island we went on a Thursday and they had a small jazz band (Thanks Frankie for the suggestion!). It was very enjoyable. The food was good, the service was good, seemed like everyone in the place was enjoying themselves, really made a good impression on us for our first time there. And, not too bad on the wallet either.

It's one of the best restaurants on the island, including the resort ones, and I think it's a pretty good deal for the quality of the food and service.
