RE: Sheep Attacked - csgray - 11-29-2009 Llamas do just fine in the Oregon coast range where it rains and drizzles and pours and mists and, well you get the idea. I think it is important that you make sure they aren't forced to stand around in mud, but that is true for all livestock. Carol RE: Sheep Attacked - David M - 11-29-2009 Pam So sorry to hear about your problems - not a good situation. As for llamas, we have a neighbor above us that has had them. Don't recall the rain being an issue. David Ninole Resident RE: Sheep Attacked - pslamont - 11-30-2009 The current status is: 10 unharmed 6 dead 9 wounded will probably make it 2 wounded not looking too good 10 missing Total Herd was 37. We are hoping we have 10 out in the woods hiding out but are not holding our breaths. Dogs have not returned to date... thank goodness. Waiting patiently and being gentle with the very frightened animals that are here in their pen. Not letting them out to graze but rought in a bunch of Timothy's Hay instead. Gotta get them well..... I remember the day you and I watched a couple of lambs being born in your pasture. Very cool. Have that gun ready. Andrew RE: Sheep Attacked - tada - 12-01-2009 I would agree with the .22 suggestion because it has less noise and less range. Makes me think of how I'd hate to lose my chickens and they are just chickens. another ides is a pit trap though the last time I tried to dig a hole on the Big Island I didn't get very far. I was just reading about botanist David Douglas whose legacy is the douglas fir tree who died under mysterious circumstances in 1835 in Honokaa by falling into a cattle trap and got gored by a bull. RE: Sheep Attacked - asly - 12-02-2009 If you can't find lamas, I've heard guard donkeys can be quite fierce (I think I read an article about using donkeys in Mother Earth News). Her in MT I mostly see lamas on the sheep ranches however. RE: Sheep Attacked - lquade - 12-02-2009 yes, and there was an article in the paper, they are rounding up the kona nightengales and will be giving them away... free donkeys!! RE: Sheep Attacked - tada - 12-02-2009 A donkey crossed the road in front of me going inland from Waikoloa the dryest desolate place on the Big Island that I seen so different from Puna. RE: Sheep Attacked - Scott_S - 12-02-2009 Pam, that's horrible, I hope the other 10 come home unharmed. It ticks me off how some people don't take responsibility of dog ownership. Our 12lb terrier just had 20 stitches removed, two weeks ago the neighbor's dog tore him up. I went over and told him the dog had to go, not the first problem with the dog, he took it to the pound that day. Good luck taking care of your dog problem. Scott RE: Sheep Attacked - pslamont - 12-02-2009 Today we put 10 sheep in the "sick" pen and let 11 out into the field. This evening we have 10 sheep in the sick pen and 13 in the other one. Two more came in! Maybe there is hope for the other missing eight...... I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh Crap, She's up!" |
