RE: Adult store - Blakeyboy1 - 01-27-2010

Why are we such prudes in this country when it comes to sex? I love sex, I sometimes frequent this type of establishment, I have a daughter and I am not a sex offender... just someone with a healthy and happy sex life. I have to agree with DickWilson over and over and over...

I agree with you Carey, But I think the store owner has a very good point regarding his investment in the lease, Sounds to me more like Shipman should have an issue with Keaau Plaza, not the shop owner. And I think that as Bob pointed out, he is running a legal business in an area zoned for it and should not have to defend himself against drummed up "public outrage".

That's the problem with this country, so fake proud. In Europe housewives get naked on daytime TV shows. USA? Instead of pretending that sex is tabu, sex education should be wide spread, and that includes sex shops too. There is nothing wrong with making something better with additions.

Why is it always the people with children who seem to think sex is so offensive?

RE: Adult store - nanasohana - 01-27-2010

Ok, I have to comment on this one....the only real issue here is the closeness to the school, right? Is there an ordinance against it being so close? If not, there should be.

RE: Adult store - DickWilson - 01-27-2010

So tell me Nancy, why should there be an ordinance against it? So we can continue to treat human sexuality as a tabu subject, and hope that if we ignore it, it will just go away?

RE: Adult store - Carey - 01-27-2010

Nancy, as I pointed out, the issue in the articles is that Shipman has a lease agreement with the centers owner & feels that their lease agreement was not honored (there is no mention of a zoning issue in anything I have read, so I do not think that is an issue in this).

I think that is the only issue in this is does the landowner have the right to have certain lease requirements, and did the shopping center break the lease requirements when they sublet the store... The store owner, as sub-letter would have to abide by his sub-lease, and I seem to remember that the center owner, as land tenant, would be liable to the landowner for the actions of the sub-let tenant.... but that is decades way back in my history from business law 101

There should be a law against selling Adults!

Nancy, there is regulations but it applies to adult orientated businesses, not sexually orientated businesses. Hawaii County has never applied it.

RE: Adult store - Chuysmom - 01-27-2010

holy crap. Dick - I was not implying that all people who go to adult stores are pervs...at all. What I said was that there is a chance that someone is a perv and that the locale could be a better one for both the offender (just kidding!!! LOL) and the kids. Let's face it, teachers, medical providers, judges, anyone could be a perp, but why up the odds? Devany you are right and he has every right to operate his business there. Just saying...not judging. I sold fun things a couple of years ago - I am not adverse to healthy "play" by healthy adults.
