I too must comment on the loud music at Kaleo's. I love the food - as does everyone I have taken there - but the volume is most often just too loud. I love all kinds of music and come from a family that includes musicians that play loud rock but there is a time and place for everything.... so this is not a case of being an old fuddy duddy. They need to pay attention to these complaints and fix the issue. You do not have to be loud to be good!
Regarding Hilo Bay cafe, i think that it is an excellent restaurant and every time I recommend it to visitors they wind up going every day. I had an issue last time though...my husband and I made a reservation for our anniversary and requested a specific table. When we arrived, someone else was sitting there and we were told that they would not honor our request, "it's their policy". I have never experienced this anywhere else - and I am very well traveled - so it has now put me off the place. I know they are popular but if you are a regular I feel they should let you have what you want with enough advance warning. I had told them on the phone that it was our anniversary so it really made me mad. Haven't been back since and it has been a few months...their loss but ours also : (

One more thing about Kaleo's - the service can at times be exasperating. There is a very nice female server who is "on" but there is also a very spaced out young man who we try not to get stuck with. I have seen him just stand in the back and stare at the walls, never checking if you need another drink or if anything is alright. He seems better suited to some other profession and we cross our fingers every time not to get him as our server!

We send all the guests from our B&B to Kaleo's. They rave about it and thank us for sending them there. It's our favorite place to eat. Barbara & Phil are our favorite wait staff. Maggie, the jazz singer Sundays and Thursdays, is fabulous.

I have had bad service at Hilo Bay Cafe too many times. The servers are a little full of themselves working in one of the better restaurants. They are sort of cold (trying to be urban chic or something), and when there's a mistake in the meal they are really BAD at acknowledging it and worse at fixing it.

They have good food but I now have zero expectations of a pleasant and professional experience. Used to live five minutes away from them and went frequently.

For some reason, Pesto servers are always nice to us, Yes a little slow but much more personable and caring that it's a good experience. I walk out of there happy and out of HBC thinking about calling the manager and explaining what is not OK when it comes to service.

I know some people love them, and I'm happy for them they have experienced only the good in this restaurant.

As an example of stuff I've had at HBC, I once got a salad that was full of dirt (not good with rat lungworm around), and the best they could manage was to replace it. They could at least acknowledge that it sucks to have a salad full of crunchy dirt, but instead they put off this air that they're humoring you even though you're fussy.

Also, a medium burger should not arrive in a plate swimming with blood and a bun that is bright red and soaked with blood, and then instead of starting over they just toss the burger on the grill and cook it WELL not Medium and bring it back 15 minutes later after the rest of the table is done eating. And again no awareness that this is uncool. Just a couple of my numerous experiences along those lines with them.

They want to be a foodie place but they can't cook a burger to order, hmm.

Only went to Hilo Bay Cafe once, for lunch on a weekday. Two older women.

We had to wait 11 minutes to be seated, although more than half the tables were vacant, and then our table was right outside the door to the kitchen (I mean right outside - twice we got bumped into by waitstaff). It took 8 minutes to get a menu (yes, by this point I was timing everything). After 10 minutes waiting for someone to take our order, we left, with an indignant comment to the "hostess", who looked as if we were speaking Greek.

Oh, and the restaurant was never more than half full the entire time we were there.

Yes, Maggie Heron and Paul Lindberg are fantastic. One of the best jazz duos in Hawaii. Every time I've gone to hear them at Kaleos, the place was packed. Brother Walter's the best, as well. Love that place.

I was disappointed when I first went to Kaleo's but Janet and Kahuna Scott and Julie Paul persuaded me to try it again. It has been good or better each time since the 1st time. Lunch service is much better than dinner.

Must have hit a really bad night the 1st time. It happens.

Huggo's??? lol

Janet, yep, I know that table at HBC. I was forced to sit there once when it was busy. Horrible table, they shouldn't be so greedy and should take it out. Some parts of a room are simply not suitable for dining. You know they have had umpteen people give them feedback on that table, and they act like they never heard it before. That's what I'm talking about with the attitude. They don't acknowledge when they aren't on the ball; they act like it's the customer who is weird.

Last time I ate at HBC I really enjoyed my scallops - both of them.
My MIL refuses to go there anymore because she says she doesn't like to eat stuff she doesn't know what it is. We really tried to convince her last time that she really did get the eggplant she ordered LOL.

Wish Kaleo's wasn't so far, have enjoyed it every time we've been there.

My vote for my favorite recently discovered place is Miyo's in Waiakea Villa's. My wife and I complain about the fact that we live in a place of great natural beauty but so few restaurants here can take advantage. Miyo's has a great view overlooking the lagoon. Lunch specials are about $10-11.
