RE: safeway - Chuysmom - 02-26-2011 When I was growing up we went to a local bakery - Burzynski's Bakery. They had loaves of rye, pumpernickel, sourdough, etc. and they cut them right there when you bought it. We had Italian bakeries, polish bakeries, jewish bakeries (you get it). There are a few I have tried here, but the costs outweigh the desire sometimes. Short and Sweet is way pricey and not such customer service; Lankey's is good, but high-priced and cash only. KTA has some good pastries, but I've yet to find a good rye or sourdough bread with a chewy crust. Safeway has been selling Ranchers Reserve for sometime now...even back in PHX. Their NY strips are fabulous...tender and thick...nice. They do ask you several times while in the store if you have found everything - that's kinda cool...they will take you to your item too...not just tell you "aisle 9." No one store has everything but I am looking forward to a nice, new, clean giant supermarket with all the trappings! They personally escort you to the item instead of waving at the distance and guessing an aisle number. Thanks for that tip on Mamane sourdough, hikatz! and Cat! I was in there on Monday this week and there was a good assortment. I'm sure it wasn't a week old (as in Tuesday delivery only), because the baguettes were super soft and you know how baguettes get hard quickly. Bought sourdough, farmer's bread, and baguette. Terrific sourdough for what is available on the island. Although La Brea does make a good sourdough (Foodland). The new Safeway building looks great. I am concerned about how messed up the already funky traffic flow will be there on Maka'ala without a traffic signal. All I can say is that it MUST have been financed (and perhaps built) by the developers because we have NEVER seen one go in so quickly in a County or State installation. RE: safeway - missydog1 - 02-26-2011 Jerry, thanks! Someone just pointed out to me that the light has been functioning for a few weeks or so. Duh, color me unobservant. That's a great addition. Wow, it looks almost good to go. I hope the parking is going to be better than the old one. I don't see how it couldn't be better; it sure looks better. Time will tell! Anyhow, loved the traffic light. Someone thought ahead on that one. Yay. :0 I want to be the kind of woman that, when my feet hit the floor each morning, the devil says "Oh Crap, She's up!" RE: safeway - csgray - 02-26-2011 Olive Bar! I dream of a real olive bar: black ones, green ones, teeny tiny red and black ones, purple ones, greek, Italian, Spanish, French and California: manzanilla, picholine, kalamata, niçoise, liguria, ponentine, gaeta, lugano or sevillano. Feta, dolmas, artichoke hearts, sun dried tomatoes, and garlic cloves all by the pound! I can bake my own bread, but I miss access to a wide assortment of olives. I know I am dreaming here, but hope springs eternal! Carol RE: safeway - macuu222 - 02-26-2011 The Kona Safeway has one. It would be nice to have one here! RE: safeway - myomy - 02-26-2011 Walmart may be wishing that they had done a Super Wally there on that site. *************************************** Please don't pee on my leg and then try to tell me that it is raining. RE: safeway - macuu222 - 02-26-2011 Ya snooze...Ya loose. I've been to the Kona target many times...They are extremely helpful and will find what your looking for no matter how many employees it takes. All the Kona target employees are connected with wireless comms to expedite finding whatever your looking for. And if the Hilo target is anything like that.... Walmart will be hurtimg come August RE: safeway - Bullwinkle - 02-27-2011 Cant wait .... now we need a costco - even if they are pooh poohing the rumors of "lease talks". a lowes would be nice too - speaking of wish lists |
