RE: budget.... what do you spend your money on? - Radiopeg - 08-15-2011 In WA we never had a flea problem, so the three pets are getting dosed every three weeks. The dog, who turns out to be allergic, is also getting a new tablet. The fleas who live here are becoming resistant to the meds, according to my vet. Oh yeah, and Heart worm too. Was not a problem in Chewelah. Adds up quickly. Life goes on, with you or without you. RE: budget.... what do you spend your money on? - dayna - 08-16-2011 quote: That is great to know! We don't have fleas really at all here. I am a dog groomer and sometimes I see a dog come in from out of town with fleas. but never local dogs. And heartworms? Frankly I've never even seen the medication for that so thanks so much for that warning! Dayna www.AvianNation.com RE: budget.... what do you spend your money on? - Carey - 08-16-2011 Our dog is on Sentinel - one tiny tablet once a month is good for fleas & heartworm. Coming from IL, we have had to medicate for heartworm for decades. Some areas here are loaded with fleas, others not so much... but it is a good idea to have the outdoor pets covered. This chart is from 2010, so add a dollar more for your common food supplies. Gas is currently $4.27 gallon. This is an older chart, but will give you an idea of the cost, you will be spending, while living in Hawaii. http://www.areavibes.com/keaau-hi/cost-of-living/average-prices/#housing_utilities RE: budget.... what do you spend your money on? - missydog1 - 10-23-2011 quote:sorry to respond to an older comment, but just saw it. The Olympic Peninsula is a true wet wet rain forest. I spent a winter there. There were times that the standing water on the ground was over the tops of my knee high boots doing heavy rain. I'm talking about standing water in the driveway ... we had mushrooms growing on the walls inside the house. All of my clothes got ruined by mildew. It is way easier to adapt to the humidity here! [] As far as expenses go, I found that there were far more expenses at the beginning, and different types of expenses. Any time you move into a new home, lots of expenses, especially if you are an owner. After a while, it is just maintenance. If you are the type who doesn't buy much unless something wears out, there's not so much consumption outside the basics. Every so often you get hit with a big one, like a major car repair or an appliance failing, or even a major home system failing. That happens anywhere, of course. One thing about living over here is that I no longer have much of an entertainment budget. In California, I went to a lot of events, concerts, movies, museum shows, plays, and ate out more. Here I really don't require much amusement, and the offerings rarely rise to the "OMG I have to see that" level -- especially after being here for some years. RE: budget.... what do you spend your money on? - julieb - 10-23-2011 Inter-island travel for what ever reasons, entertainment, vacation, shopping, even some medical issues. Right now I'm paying lots of dollars to be in Oahu; hotel, rental car, meals, while my husband has surgery. RE: budget.... what do you spend your money on? - missydog1 - 10-23-2011 So sorry to hear that Julie. Yes, medical trip to Oahu is major. What is even worse is when you no longer have money to go be with a loved one who needs a procedure or surgery. My grandson almost died in 2006 and was in Kapiolani for 3 weeks. I spent everything I had to cover being there for family members. Insurance doesn't cover it. At this point, we're learning how to handle it without support. My son just went over and had spinal surgery, by himself-- they put you in a cab and take you to the airport, and good luck. His doctor even wrote that he needed a companion, but the insurance blew the letter off. After a dozen trips to Oahu for medical, some extended, the cost is just too much any more. Not visiting a loved one who is in the hospital is really tough. I envy those who can drive there and visit family. If the medical trip isn't a serious one, the opportunity to shop or sightsee can help ease the pain of spending so much for a short hop. RE: budget.... what do you spend your money on? - TomK - 10-23-2011 Kathy, I can sympathize with that and it's something one needs to consider in costs when living here. In some cases medical or family issues require a trip to the mainland as well - or farther - and is definitely something you need to consider unless your whole family lives here. Even if they do they may need medical attention off-island and I can tell you it's not cheap. Tom http://apacificview.blogspot.com/ RE: budget.... what do you spend your money on? - missydog1 - 10-23-2011 Thanks Tom, I know you have had to deal with some stuff involving even more distance. That puts it in perspective! |
