I am so sorry about your dog. Now is the time to think about prevention of future accidents. Since Govt. Beach Rd. does not have a speed limit sign posted (apparently relying on the common sense of local drivers), I suggest that you contact Fred Blas' office and ask that speed limit signs be posted on both ends of the road. He can arrange this easily, since it is a county road. Please do not delay - the next life you save might be that of a human child.

After rereading the OP it is crystal clear the dog was at the end of its driveway, on cwaters' own property, when the driver swerved for whatever reason and killed the dog. I constantly see dogs peacefully sleeping at the end of their driveways here in Puna, it seems to be a commonplace and accepted practice.

It does seem rather heartless to jump in with unfounded criticisms of grieving pet owners without carefully reading the post before spouting off. My heartfelt sympathies to cwaters and family.

swaters, I am so sad for you. I know how I would feel in your place, how much pain and loss and grief and anger. That you had to watch it happen without being able to stop it, is just terrible. [Sad]

I wish you had more to go on as to the identity of this driver. Would you recognize her if you saw her again?

I am so sorry about your dog. That must be very hard to bear. My heart goes out to you.

Perhaps we should all agree simply not to reply to those who try to push our buttons. I find myself in full sympathy, cwaters, for you and your family. It might be a good idea to put two giant rocks at both sides of your driveway now. My friend did this at their drive just to protect the driveway from runaway idiots. There is little in the world that compares to loss of one's pet.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your loved one.
I can't even begin to imagine the pain you must feel.

We feel really bad for you and your family.

RE: Hit and run on Goivernment Beach road - Obie - 01-10-2012

I just came back from driving Government Beach Road. The private property and all of the gates are at least 20 feet back from the edge of the road. There is no place along there where the private property comes close to the edge of the road.

I am sorry, but this dog had to be in the road and not on private property.

Sorry for your loss but it would not have happened if your dog was on a leash or actually on your own property.

bI am so sorry about your loss. Obie you are so out of line. Makes me wonder if you run over the poor dog

Obie, in the name of decency. Really. You don't have to prove you are right at the expense of someone else's peace of mind. Right or wrong are not important here and this is not about you. Simply be a man, apologize, and stop.

RE: Hit and run on Goivernment Beach road - mikewj - 01-10-2012

Hi, Obie:

I've been following the postings regarding the death of the dog, and I wonder why is it so important for you to be right?

I get that you don't like dogs running loose, and that you have had incidents in the past where loose dogs have attacked you.

However, the death of this animal has obviously caused a great deal of distress to its' owner, so could you make an effort to just let it go and move on?

In the long term a little compassion for a fellow human being would serve you better than your attempt to convince us that the dog must have been at fault. Regardless of where the dog was, hit and run on a dog is a reportable accident, and failing to stop reflects very poorly on the character of the driver. Peace, out.
