Just curious, EW, but if the appeal by Bayer is successful, does that mean you'll change your opinion about Roundup? I ask because you seem set on having civil courts determine what you think is true.

Tom, while I respect your opinion, I really am done with this thread, even if an a-hole comes back, puts words in my mouth and insults me for my opinion.
I think you know the answer to that question as I had an opinion of Roundup long before any court cases. Something in me deep in the recesses way back in the 80s when I was a kid. Hippie parents warned me about these things.

Mercury in our clothing, lead in our drinking water pipes, DDT on our fruit, then agent orange then what next? Whatever it is, it will be claimed safe for a long while until proven otherwise. Then, whoops, (by the government), "our bad, that now isn't safe". Steer clear of most chemicals to give you a "shortcut" job just to be on the safe side. (notice I said most not all. Most because not all chemicals are deemed dangerous).

That's part of the reason I took all those chemistry courses in college- to learn more about them and be able to make my own decision as to which are dangerous.

Aloha. Happy Sunday.

Let's really drop this and I will come back and revisit in a years time to see about more court cases and appeals.

OK, that's fine, I have no problem with you taking a break from this thread although I wish you had answered my question as it's rather fundamental to this thread. I hope you don't have any bad feelings about me or others that have questioned your posts. You know I'm a scientist but have spent a long time involved in the skeptical community as well and there are certain things that fire my synapses, despite them getting a little old these days. I do know, however, that even if people have completely different views, they can still get on despite the odd argument. It's how I met my partner for the last 20 years!

Tom, I think EW did answer your question. Part of the problem is that the use of scientific knowledge as bludgeon, as well a business practices that distort & obfuscate the scienctific process for profit, lead to a deep mistrust by the general public of the information they are being given.

https://www.democracynow.org/2018/8/14/how_monsanto_plants_stories_suppresses_science

I've done my time splicing genes, inserting plasmids, and selecting for my own personally created GMO (most bioscience students do in college). I even considered applying with Monsanto, but a closer look at their business practices highlighted the serious problems of profit driven science (heavy use of PR, limitations on studying the impacts of their technology, legal division to both enforce policy and harass any that dare to question or challenge them, etc) Whatever you may say bout the benefits of Monsanto's GMO technology, their business practices are clearly not focused on enhancing the social good.

If people don't want GMO / round-up in their food, fine. Make it clear on the packaging so they can choose and everyone else with scientific superiority can treat them like Amish foodies, self-exiles from the technological revolution (cool clothes and beard optional). How does this harm anyone?

ironyak - forgive me, I think you have just woken up and I'm just going to bed! Been up for over 24-hrs.

I don't work in an industry that supports making things up and think I've made that clear, possibly obliquely. What annoys me is having people say a lawsuit determines what is safe or not. If we go down that route OJ Simpson really is innocent. I want real evidence and experiments that can be repeated by others. My sister died at the age of 33 from non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, it's torn me to pieces since then, we were very close, so this thread has really hit me emotionally but also got my rational side going.

Having said that, I thought the answer had already been given here - label organic food as organic and thought most agreed with that.

Anyway, no hard feelings, I'm too knackered and am off to bed.

Naw Tom I basically answered it for you. Case or no case I still don't trust Roundup. The 180 million lost by Monsanto court case only backs up my opinions. I don't have too much trust in the outcome in courtroom because of the bottomless wallet that Monsanto has to hire the absolutely best Lawyers out there.

No hard feelings

Make the most of your Sunday. Aloha.

Now that everyone has stated their opinion on Roundup and Monsanto about twenty times each can we finally leave this topic alone? Its really been beat to death.

Sorry - rainyjim's 22 page predication cannot be allowed to come true - that's too much power for one man to have!

"Everything but the kitchen sink" in not just an expression, it's a challenge!
