The word cheers prompted a reply! I was raised in Kailua, Oahu since 1965, grad from Kailua High 1973 and have always wanted to move here so i could have land and horses. Found a nice spot in the acres in 2005 and have my 2 horses free at last. I am raising my 11 year old keiki as a single mom. I'm a self employed RN, work from home and love working on my land. I also have 3 sheep, 2 dogs, 3 cats, 15 chickens, 2 coquis and 16 crickets. Life is good! RE: Introduce yourself - JayJay - 11-10-2007 My name is JayJay and I'm from Seattle originally. While in the Navy in Pearl Harbor I flew here to the Big Island with a shipmate and we rented a car and drove around the Island and camped at Kaimu Beach ... I remember vividly thinking that it was the most beautiful spot on Earth and I really think it was. We spent much of the day there and I also remember walking out into the light surf and standing on the sandbar and just being in awe of what was before me. We drove into Hilo, through little sleepy Pahoa,it was the year KTA was being built and I think that was 1967, anyway, I knew then that someday I'd return and here I am! This comming summer will be my fourteenth year living here in exotic Puna. I was fortunate to be able to have two extra lots and I immediately began planting a permacultue which is still ongoing. I stated with the fruit trees, although now I'm putting the emphasis on vegtable and vine production since the trees and bushes, about 90% food producers are in. I've just completed building and planting an overhead trellis which is cantilevered on one end so the vines ... which are several different species of passion fruit, will form a giant canopy twelve feet off the ground and covering almost one thousand sq. ft. Passion fruit are one of my faorite fruits and by next fall I should have my first crop. One of the species I'm gowing is a cross between the purple and the large yellow which are a new hybrid and divinely sweet yet super sour!I can't wait! I've found, at least for me, that the best way to actually get the work done is to plan well and move in segments,i.e, I'll expand a little, (put in a new system or rockery or trellis or whatever), and then I'll go into a consolidation phase for awhile, where I'll make sure everything I created remains viable and in working order and/or producing. Then, when that's accomplished, I'll go back into an expansion cycle ... so expansion, then consolidation and back to expansion and so forth. This really wasn't my idea, rather the concept goes back to Mr. Robert Rodale who was the editor of Organc Gardening ... and it works well. I also never work in the heat of the day, rather I'll sometimes work in the morning yet the majority of my attention to the garden is done in the afternoon till sunset and at the end of the day I've always got food which I collect as I tend the permaculture. For those of us arriving here from a temperate climate there is so much to learn if you're a gardener ... new plants, which in many cases you'll find you never knew existed will grow here. It just knocks me out sometimes how fast plants can grow on the Big Island if thy like where they are. If you do have an interest in putting in a garden, I think the best way is to start with the fruit trees and make sure to leave a large "sunspot" (or two), so you'll be able to produce good vegtables in the future, and make sure to plant those trees on the North and East side of the property line if possible, since this procedure will help you estabish your sunspot(s), Anyway, for all of you who are new here to Hawaii, and to those of you who are stateside dreaming of the day when the great transition will happen, and to the "old-timers." ~Aloha, JayJay JayJay RE: Introduce yourself - allensylves - 11-10-2007 JayJay, I would be interested to hear why you plant trees on the East side. If you do not mind, I am starting a new thread in the Gardening forum: Trees and sunspots, to take this discussion. Thanks. Allen Baton Rouge, LA & HPP RE: Introduce yourself - Carolann R - 11-10-2007 Aikahimomma and JayJay - I loved both your stories and am so looking forward to reading your posts! I know our gardening threads will be bursting with questions for you JayJay! Aikahimomma - you have so many animals...what a joy! Are you working with an agency do use your RN status or at HMC? Hope to see a lot from you in the future! E Komo Mai!! I will arrive at my home in HPP in January, 2008 (renting from friends)! My name is Sophie. I have lived in Seattle for the last 21 years. I am an RN (33 years now), currently working at a Seattle hospital. I am blessed to have friends who seem to want nothing better (an Ohio girl learning aloha truly does exist!) than to help me make this transition and see me flourish. I am loving the journey to this isle as much as my anticipated arrival and want to begin by thanking you for all the information I have been able to glean from here thus far. Mahalo! What great stories! I have lived in the islands (from NM and CA mostly) since 1994,but first arrived in 1977. Have seen many changes here. So happy that I was finally able to make the move. Have lived on the Puna side since 2003 and every day I wake up grateful for the beauty that surrounds me. I love my street, my neighbors, my house, my friends - I'm even ok with the coquis for the most part! Glad you are all here and happy to find this thread to learn more about you all. Been livin in Puna 8 years.. being cautious of new technology and the limits of censorship connected with each....etc. and the ripple effect the written word can have, and having gone back and read a lot of the introductions I'm tryin to figure out who's here and who commin. How many people, JUST, read, and never post? Of the 2 sites like this I've come across, ( I really ain't got time fer this sillyness) this one I like mo betta it'is .....mellower. I'm gonna have to say Rob's style works better than that other site, that had an agenda. I know a couple people in here, maybe more, how long has Punaweb been alive? letme lurk somo chillins' RE: Introduce yourself - nvnites - 11-10-2007 Hello to everyone out there in Punaville. We are Bill and Bea, we're currently in Henderson NV (Las Vegas Light) But we've been building in Eden Roc for about 9 months now. We're hoping to be completely moved over about mid 2008. We have some family on the islands (Samoan) although I (Bill) am about as much of a Waspy looking dude as you're going to find and Bea was born and raised in Germany we're hoping to find our niche over there. From the looks of this Punaweb everyone seems to have the same idea, work, Garden and enjoy the beauty.... We enjoy putting down a few cold ones, BBQ'ing, fishing, miscellaneous hell raising and debauchery. I'm quite certain we'll be asking alot of questions and participating on the forums considerably more over the next few months... Hopefully we'll find a few kindred spirits out there to enjoy the Island with.. Peace Bill and Bea....
