RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - HiloJulie - 04-19-2026 Can someone explain why the quoting of what another poster has said is being moderated out while what the poster originally said is left to stand? Sometimes it's time. Sometimes it's horseshoes and hand grenades. Sometimes it's fission. ETA: LOL! I would not expect it any other way! But I would add that it seems more like the squeaky wheels always get pumped full of grease! RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - Punatang - 04-19-2026 Based on the lack of historical reference along with the dearth of vision, creativity or inspiration in some of these comments, it becomes clear why a vocal minority of folks feel the need for some far off bureaucrats and politicians to do the majority of their decision-making for them. Naturally, when the current, imperium ex distantia, is all that they have known for so many years, some people became conditioned. While unfortunate, this is completely normal and understandable. This compulsion to conserve the status quo and stymie progress, is forgivable. Admittedly, a more robust effort should be made to ease this fringe's anxiety. Thanking The Lord for small mercies, it will take a fair amount of time to turn and shrink this over-sized ship. As a result, while they may protest loudly, the overly conditioned among us should not, in reality, be unduly inconvenienced. Those of us saddled with the debt would be grateful if folks would please excuse our mess while we are remodeling. RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-19-2026 Based on the lack of historical reference along with the dearth of vision, creativity or inspiration Let’s not forget a dearth of money. Back in the historical reference days, when men were men, they made their own way in the world. Women died in childbirth due to a lack of medical care, people pitched pennies and went hungry. Others who were lost, left behind, or dropped over dead without a tombstone were par for the course, or Oregon Trail (ever play? So many ways to die) RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - randomq - 04-20-2026 Punatang, I am inclined to agree with *less* money (and power) going to the federal government, but I am also inclined to agree that a federal program that helps rural areas like Puna have enough doctors is vital. Seems there could be a reasonable middle ground. What debt is it that YOU find YOURSELF saddled with? Is taking care of Hawaii's/America's keiki, its less fortunate, its homeless, its unemployed, its handicapped, its kupuna, its rebuilding when destroyed by nature, its research into prevention of invasive species from destroying natural habitats and all the other things humanity can do for the good of common society an acceptable or unacceptable reason to incur debt? Is war an acceptable or unacceptable reason to incur debt? Or is funding one choice causing debt to be incurred in order to fund the other choice? And yet, still no suggestion as to how to restore the now lost funding for the Tutu and Me program. Oh well, who can afford daycare when we have much bigger things to pay for? RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-20-2026 Another attempt to cut federal funding for Hawaiian Homelands. Maybe they could look into local sources of revenue, perhaps an island wide poi fundraiser? Or charge the navy rent for Pearl Harbor? Native Hawaiian leaders and lawmakers are pushing back against President Donald Trump’s proposal to remove funding for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, which he suggested last year, but failed. “It’s not like we’re seeing benefits to the community that are flowing from, you know, money saved from those cuts. Those monies are going to fuel wars around the world. For a lot of Native Hawaiians, I think, probably just another chapter of a long story of getting screwed over time,” State Sen. Jarrett Keohokalole said. https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2026/04/20/trump-proposes-cut-hawaiian-home-lands-funding/ RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - ChunksterK - 04-21-2026 DHHL is not the best example to cite of brutal, unfair funding cuts, of which there have been many. Here's just a partial list of Hawaiian Homelands' failing over the past 15 years or so: 2019 Bribery Scheme: A federal investigation revealed that a local engineer paid over $240,000 in bribes to officials to land a $2.5 million DHHL engineering contract for dam assessments on Kauai. Systemic Mismanagement Claims: The department has faced accusations of prioritizing commercial interests over beneficiaries, with over 28,000 Native Hawaiians waiting for, or dying while on, the, waiting list. Audit Criticisms: A 2013 audit (with impacts felt in recent years) noted failures in managing lease cancellations and delinquent accounts. Historical and Ongoing Legal Battles: Lawsuits from beneficiaries have been common due to allegations of land mismanagement, illegal transfers of land, and failure to pay compensation. Related Public Corruption: While distinct from direct DHHL management, the department has been caught up in broader regional corruption cases in Hawaii that have led to multiple convictions. These issues, combined with the slow pace of delivering homesteads, have created a long-standing crisis of trust, with the state recently reaching a $328 million settlement over a 23-year-old class action lawsuit. Oh, and I think there is still an on-going Federal corruption investigation of OHA/DHHL. RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 04-21-2026 DHHL is not the best example to cite of I have to agree with you there. Bribery, mismanagement, and corruption is certainly not what I like to see my money spent on, but the people with the purse strings seem to make DHHL look like a bunch of small time stooges in comparison to what’s wasted elsewhere. At least, maybe, a few Hawaiian families would get on the land as management mismanages the process. It would be more constructive than destructive. RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - Punatang - 04-21-2026 I have to agree with you there. Bribery, mismanagement, and corruption is certainly not what I like to see my money spent on - Edge. This is very wise thinking. My gut-spiracy-theory is that if we could just eliminate 1/2 of the grift and fraud, we could double SNAP in a snap and Tripple our Tutu's. Sadly, when anyone tries, well... Come on man that's ridiculous. And so is white folks going on about mismanagement of OHA, when the state has been short changing them for eons.. Seriously man, more than 40 years have passed since the state formally recognized that “twenty percent of all funds derived from the public land trust” must be set aside for the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. And they've gotten a pittance of that.. up until a few years ago they weren't getting 4%.. let alone the 20% our constitution requires. And besides.. don't you all have enough examples of white ** the pooch that you no need whine about how the Hawaiians manage their affairs? Sheesh.. This vid's a few years old.. and the Green administration has been making strides to rectify the situation.. and still it is a good example how bitching about OHA is misplaced.. it's all trickle down from haole's mismanagement.. |
