RE: Helicopter ID - Bullwinkle - 03-23-2012

@ kathy H
I guess some folks do grow in bathrooms, I'd also guess the dea boys would be working on that too......... its all about spectral emissions. I think they see a whole lot more than they claim. Quantity of contraband seems to be the motivating factor for them to act imho.

Astronomers found what is at the edge of the universe using spectral analysis - If the feds want to know whats going down in your shower, I would not bet against the technology and the dea

Cheaper less invasive just to spread some pollen if they want to end the game - seeds in cannabis destroys the street value - on the other hand the method not selective either.........

RE: Helicopter ID - Bullwinkle - 03-23-2012

Now put your self in the place of the mission specialist - you see a few light returns on the meter, cruising over the 'hood - just a bump on the sensor .... and just a few (low density ) punatics on the ground......

what ya gonna do - seems like many of us have been annoyed by those couple of low passes with full optics

My prediction is it will not stop until we have a major overhaul of drug policy or the dea plants a helicopter the hot ponds.

RE: Helicopter ID - missydog1 - 03-23-2012

thanks Bullwinkle, but I wasn't talking about growing in the bathroom, or anywhere. I was thinking of what they see inside houses of people who are NOT growing but are getting observed. I used the shower as an example of a place we expect privacy, that's all.

There are a lot of shade houses in my area. People doing commercial non-pakalolo farming of nursery plants. That may have caught their eye.

Pretty sure what you're describing here are wire-cutters designed to guide power and phone lines into a cutter mechanism to make front-end wire strikes less catastrophic. Former ag-pilot/fixed wing tour pilot here, so I'm familiar with these devices. There's usually one drooping off the "chin," and another projecting upward off the "eyebrow" of the chopper's front end. The silver Hughes is David Okita's - I believe he operates Volcano Helicopters. I thought the yellow Hughes was the county machine, but the linked .pdf helicopter ID lists it as a private Maui-based machine, and the large reddish-orange chopper seen today is the Coast Guard Dauphin. Seeing the latter in today's operation today here in Fern Forest puzzles me a bit, as I thought it was only utilized in rescue/search ops. I'm not familiar with the grey "boxy" helicopter which seems to be a relatively new presence. As I understand it, the MJ inderdiction operations are conducted by the Federal Government (using locally hired machines operated by agencies and private companies and also the army-green National Guard Bell). Like many of you I've become very weary of the intrusive and obnoxious presence of packs of these machines routinely flying at altitudes which violate normal minimum 500' from any person, vehicle, or structure Federal regulation in part 91 of the FAR's. These are not power-line patrols, which are conducted by single machines (not a fleet of various helicopters) and generally alongside major thoroughfares. Blue Hawaiian's tour choppers are easily identified by their paint scheme and are generally very careful to fly as high as clouds and time constraints will permit - they don't circle in residential areas peering in back yards.

I've written our U.S. Senators and Congressman to express my own opinions on the matter, reminding them that this sort of heavy-handed use of airspace over residential areas would end pretty quickly if it was conducted in an area like Kahala or Waikoloa where there are few po' folks with limited clout. I'd like to suggest you do the same if you're not happy with the status quo and the rather cavalier and proprietary use of airspace over Puna. You may want to remind Legislators that we have a burgeoning and far more pressing crystal meth problem that these very expensive resources could be focused on.

RE: Helicopter ID - Bullwinkle - 03-25-2012

seems like its your turn this week - tour helicopters vary their route as the lava flows change ---- all quiet at my house now - not always the case

the noise a downside - tourist dollars an upside. Having them on the helicopter at a couple of hundred dollars a pop more beneficial than seeing the tour bus (buying "local gifts to take home") at wal mart imho

RE: Helicopter ID - seekir - 03-27-2012

Tour flights only fly the coastal route from Hilo airport to the flow and back in bad weather. It takes extra time and is only used when the more direct routes are impassable due to weather.

This is an awesome link/document and I use it often, but you know what would make it even better?? PICTURES OF THE UNDERSIDES OF THE COPTERS!! Because that's what we see when they're bombarding us. Never the top view, rarely the side view, usually the UNDERSIDE VIEW! I was fighting way back when to get them to have to put their numbers on the bottoms of the copters. It's unrealistic that in order to complain we are supposed to get their numbers and, how convenient, their numbers aren't on the bottom... With sunny days come low flying copters... So loving the sun, but cringing already waiting for the bombardment of the copters.

Thanks YG for bumping this. The past week we have had many helicopters fly by. One hovered over my yard so low it made the water in the pool have wind waves.
