Mac nut, pretty sure that is from using a copy & pasting an article with a text encoded punctuation, like quotes & okina (most of them are where those punctuations should be ;~)

ADDED- this is one way that some copywrited on-line publications have of deterring plagiarism... just something to be aware of...

Thanks Carey, mystery solved. "I see" said the blind man, who didn't really see!

Kathy what is up with your keyboard and the 0 it's kind of driving me crazy!

It's probably a Microsoft thing; background here:

Ideally, the forum software would squash everything into plain ASCII...

the down side is i cant spell for beans in any of them ....grin

RE: Where is it safe? - missydog1 - 03-28-2014

Sorry about that.
I just copied and pasted. Normally I would link but like I said, some people here on slow internet object to that.

I donÔt have Microsoft anything. All Apple, Mac keyboard, regular settings.
I suppose itÔs possible that at some time some button got pushed that tweaked the settings. IÔll look when I have time.

The odd thing is the post Previewed just fine. I didnÔt see any of that in the Preview, or I wouldnÔt have hit Post.

The only one spot according to the volcano hazard map is Kahala if you trust them. Personally I feel most likely the entire island will be covered in lava again at least twice before the big island moves off the hot spot.

I doubt Oahu/Maui will be active again so might be a good idea if you are at all worried.

RE: Where is it safe? - missydog1 - 03-28-2014

itÔs interesting to read what happened to the Kohala volcano, the massive landslide. ItÔs on the USGS site here:
http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/volcanoes/kohala/

Kohala last erupted some 120,000 years ago, and no one expects it to. Haleakala is far more likely to erupt, and is expected to erupt again. The only reason it would not is if the hot spot is really not connected any more.

Compare the 2-600 years since it erupted with 120,000 for Kohala.

Hualalai is overdue to erupt and threaten Kailua Kona or north to the airport. People ignore that, well, a lot of people, not everyone.

Mauna Loa is way overdue to erupt.

According to USGS, Mauna Kea is in its post shield-building phase, explained what that means here:
http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/volcanoes/maunakea/
It could erupt, but it is much less likely than Hualalai, Mauna Loa, Kilauea.

Kohala and Mauna Kea windward cannot be covered by lava again from Mauna Loa due to topography. ThatÔs clear from a topo map of the island.

There are certainly different ways to deal with risks.
Some people like to look at it as there is always some risk no matter what so avoidance is pointless.

IÔm of the school that if you give me a list of choices with risk from almost none to extremely high, IÔll factor that in and aim for lower risk. If I donÔt have enough money to go with almost no risk, IÔll probably compromise and take medium instead of the very cheap extreme risk.

At the same time, it would be an illusion to say I am getting safety. IÔll almost certainly make some other mistake that is potentially as bad or worse. But still, in the case of deliberate choices, IÔm somewhere in the middle with choosing risk, and I donÔt want fresh lava in my yard.

Ah, Apple, that explains a lot! You could try cutting & pasting to the Apple equivalent of Notepad (something which only accepts plain text) and cutting and pasting from there into Punaweb.

Paul (and Kathy), I'm an 'only Apple' guy as well, and my posts don't come up substituting some 'Norwegian character' or whatever for apostrophes and okina marks. She has some setting enables that needs to be changed imo...

PaulW,
Your prejudice is showing. Lots of people use Macs here and don't have that problem, and we don't do that whole double cut and paste song and dance you are suggesting. Any operating system can get glitchy if the settings are off, I have used Macs, Linux, and Microsoft based machines for work and home use for years and keeping the settings clean is always important, no matter which operating system you use.

I had a friend apply for a job at Dreamworks as office manager for their legal division, which used Microsoft products exclusively, so she felt like it was safe to go off on one of her anti Apple rants during the interview. According to her friend in the office who got her the interview that rant cost her the job. Dreamworks wanted people who understood the value of using the right tool for the job, and were open minded about technology. Their creative division uses a lot of Apple products and the other divisions use Microsoft, but they did not want people who had an irrational prejudice against a whole sector of computer technology.

The whole Microsoft fanboy vs Apple fanboy thing is really juvenile in my opinion. People should use what works for them and quit making value judgements about other people based on what laptop they pull out of their computer bag. It's like judging someone based on what brand of car or truck they drive.
