I think comparing Opihikao's post and a KKK chat room is a bit of a reach. You were not just answering a question, you were trying to micromanage Rob's site.

Another racist topic, again and again.

Care to explain yourself?

Bob, feel free to ask me any questions. Right off the bat I can tell you this type of topic would be better suited for a culture preservation group, not Punaweb. Whenever you focus on one particular race/culture you create a mentality of us and them. It's not healthy, we are much more than that. The Big Island deserves more too, we deserve to live in an integrated non racial environment of equality.

I grew up with MLK(Martin Luther King Jr.) on the tube at night, my parents loved him. His dream was that we would all walk side by side some day. The only way to get there is to let go of us/them mental constructs, by focusing on the similarities of all people and disregarding racial prejudices or sterotypes.

Romanticizing native cultures seems to wind up with white people are deemed bad and natives are victims mentality. None of us lived then so it's really a negative hateful and revengeful waste of time.

Folks want to preserve their cultural heritage, whatever, do it in the proper place not in a group of mixed culture folk. I honestly can't relate to this topic, it seems like a manipulation to me. Indians were all over the board, from very peaceful to violent predatory tribe.

Lots of folk get adopted in this world, with no idea of who are their genetic ancestors. They seem to do just fine and get to sidestep the whole racial/cultural delineation game.

What matters is what you do in the present, do you do the best you can in life based on the golden rule without exception? Or do racial/cultural constraints need to be in place for you?

The thoughts that were expressed by opihikao do not just apply to native Americans , they are universal, that is they apply to all peoples

RE: The Great Spirit - Kapoho Joe - 09-15-2015

I am surprised that O-BoB can sit long enough to type what with all that UFO 'probing' he talks about!

"The thoughts that were expressed by opihikao do not just apply to native Americans , they are universal, that is they apply to all peoples."

Wouldn't it be nice if Opihikao reflected those sentiments, and kept it out of the racial/cultural realm?

RE: The Great Spirit - Rob Tucker - 09-15-2015

It would be nice if there were fewer critics in life too.

Assume the best and ask questions.

Becomming overly fixated on identity issues, especially "cultural" and particularly "racial" identity fixations, typically ends up in some skewed perspective ego weirdness, zealotry, and occasionally worse. At the minimum it usually ends up with those on the receiving end feeling barraged with a constant stream of self-gratifying propaganda ... hitching a ride on the backs of some cherry-picked collection of supposed ancestral lineage. It's like, OK already, your ethnic ancestry (albeit often cherry-picked) is so super awesome and special, again and again. So esoteric, so wonderous.

RE: The Great Spirit - Opihikaobob - 09-15-2015

If we all just pick five (5) or ten (10) of list below, the world could be a much better place for our keiki and mo'opuna. Maybe, even for ourselves.

If we all That is not in any way exclusive of any race, just different words for children and grandsons or granddaughters

Sounds good, Bob.

Growing up I had cousins who were really into their Scottish heritage from the father's side: bagpipes, kilts, Scottish sword dancing, going back to Scotland to find meet the "laird" of their clan, always had good small distillery Scotch in the house and so on. They even prepared and ate haggis. I've known people who were just as fascinated with their Irish heritage. I'm not sure who has the right to say someone else is "overly fixated" or that they have reached the point "skewed perspective ego weirdness, zealotry, and occasionally worse." Some people are just as obsessed with sports teams, others with specific music styles, personally I think people should be able to do what ever they want, as long as it doesn't cause harm to others. This finger pointing and name calling, implying that having a sense of identity about your heritage is the same thing as racism is really bizarre to me.

RE: The Great Spirit - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 09-15-2015

having a sense of identity about your heritage

It's what allowed our line of humans to survive for millions of years. "Your" group had a distinctive manner of dress, markings, dialect, and customs. That identity allowed "your" members to recognize friend or foe, and to survive. It's why we're all here today, and other homo sapiens, neanderthals, or homo erectus are not.

It's deeply rooted in our genetic makeup, and a part of how our brains continue to operate to this day.
