RE: OTA TV - terracore - 02-23-2016

I just did a fresh rescan @ 05:17pm and the 4's, 13, 9 are MIA. The 11's show up but no signal. 14 is no longer reported as 23.

ETA: H22 I'd love to hear more about these upcoming offerings. And bless you for studying and going into your field.

Gosh Kalakoa I wish it were that easy. Stream your favorite shows if you have a load of data to use. I don't. My favorite show is the news in the morning while I wash dishes. Guess I'll start buying the newspaper again.

Sure-- we have 2 channels ready to go, both are low power and run off of solar. Since we're running such low power, the beam will be concentrated at the HPP/Orchidland/Beaches area from Mountain View. Signal should be strongest in HPP. Channel 32.1 and channel 2.1.

One channel is set up with weather and a live-updating TV program guide (with a chill electronic music audio channel); the other I'm finishing up now with a low-budget loop of local news programming. I keep tweaking things though, so we'll see what the final product will end up being.

I've had 3 networks talk with me in the last month or so who are interested in entering the "Hawai`i" market, so there's opportunity for expansion with sub channels. I'm spending every extra cent I have on this project, so that is what dictates the complexity of the offerings.

The major delay I keep hitting is with something called the RF amplifier. I bought one used and it died after having a test-pattern up for about 2 days. A new one was set to arrive in mid-January, and the manufacturer told me there'd be a delay of at least 2 months. There's a very short list of amplifiers that meet both the FCC's criteria and can run off of DC/solar power. So that's where we're at with it.

The only promise I can make is that we'll be a little weird. :-)

Looks pretty right on to me!

RE: OTA TV - TomK - 02-23-2016

H22,

"I'm actually studying for my Broadcast Engineer certification exam for this very reason. Even the big markets have a shortage of engineers, let alone remote places like The Big Island. 90% of the current engineer roster is set to retire in 10 years or less with demand on spectrum increasing in a big way."

Does this mean in the future we'll be able to harass you whenever there are OTA transmitter problems here? [Wink]

You might find yourself quite busy!

Haha! I hope so!!

RE: OTA TV - Kenney - 02-24-2016

Aloha H22.I agree with Terracore that it's great you're working on your Broadcast Engineering Certificate! It takes a lot of effort to educate yourself in order to reach a goal. I'm looking forward to seeing some locally broadcast Stations and the contributions you have and will make as a trained professional!

RE: OTA TV - wheresbilly - 02-24-2016

This is the reply I received from KITV. That was the only station that bothered to reply to my inquiry about lost reception.
Please: If you have an issue take the time to contact the responsible party. NOTHING gets done unless they know someone cares. Thanks

My name is Chuck Parker. I am the News Director at KITV. Thank you for taking the time to send the note. Yes, as you know we are having signal problems on the Hilo side of the Big Island. I apologize for any inconvenience that may have or may be causing you. Our engineers are in Hilo today trying to assess the problem and figure out how to fix it. Unfortunately however, I do not have a timetable as to when it will be fixed.

I have over 1000 DVD's. It's time to start watching them.
