I generally avoid Cost-U-Less. I can get better prices and greater choice at other stores.
And the quality of their non-edibles is terrible. We bought some chairs there that fell apart in 6 months.
I've never head that kind of complaint about Costco. I'd join if they were here.

Dakine, the Manager at Cost You Less has told me (several times) that the Feta and other things that were out of stock would be in as soon as their Costco order came in. I can't prove it per se, but ask for yourself if you have doubts. They do get lots of things from Costco and mark them up and sell them. I know it's more $ but it's worth it to me not to have to drive to Kona to shop. I prefer going to Kona for R and R AND I don't like paying annual membership fees for anything so I wouldn't drive there to shop anyway. I don't like being charged for the privilege of spending my $ anywhere. It's just me..

The irony in that statement is much of their inventory is stuff they fetched from Costco and marked up.

Can you prove that?

Yes. During my last pass through CostULess, I saw Kirkland coffee, Kirkland paper products, Kirkland frozen veggies, and Kirkland laundry soap, to mention a few. And in case you don't know, Kirkland is the CostCo house brand.

Can I prove that? It's not exactly a secret. All of the "Kirkland" brand and all the bulk-packaged-sized stuff is from Costco. If you have a big enough or large recurring order of something that Costco carries you can contact the Cost-U-Less manager and they will get it for you with their mark up.

I like Cost-U-Less's produce section if you can go on the day after they get it in (by the end of the week they are nearly out of produce). Their chicken has an unnatural color to it. Last time I was going to grab something from the frozen section and it wasn't frozen. Their "Wild Caught Alaska Salmon" is processed and packaged in China. Their fruit and produce is the clear winner, and sometimes they have good sales on wine.

I have a friend who works for Cost U Less on the mainland who flies to Hilo to audit their store on occasion. He told me that they have an arrangement with Costco to sell some of their products. I can vouch that some if not all of the Costco items are marked up. As an example, we like the Kirkland brand organic maple syrup. At Cost U Less, it costs $19.99. At Costco, that maple syrup costs $9.99.

There's a good chance that even at $19.99 it's still the best value at any store in Hilo.

go to Costco all the time, and TBH it's not that exciting.

I haven't had papayas in ages because they cost $2.50 each.

Well, I walk down to mailbox at the end of the day (all the time) and TBH, it's not that exciting. But, you know what, if I didn't have a mailbox at the end of the driveway...you don't know how good you got it till it's gone.

As for Papayas? Grow em yourself, the markets are no bargain like they use to be. I'd remember not long ago they were 25-50 cents and they would say take two more for free. Now you can't find them for less than a buck. Still not bad, but maybe in another year or so, might be two bucks. And only a few places now have solo for a buck, if you want rainbow, add another 50 cents to a dollar. And Puna farmers markets are selling tomato from mainland all the time. Gotta watch... and ask questions they don't like to tell you where they get their stuff.

To be honest, I found much better deals in Chinatown on Oahu for fruit than here. Granted most of it was from mainland.

Creating easier access to even more cheap consumer goods, and all the attendant waste, would in no way benefit the environment... a second Costco would likely result in an increase in overall consumption.

Fortunately, Sports Authority is taking a positive stance on consumer consumption and it's environmental effects by closing their Hilo store.

True. So true.
I get so tired of "your reading comprehension" this and that's. The moment I see them pop up in a thread I can't help but think of Godwin's Law... because it's usually not that far behind.
I love the internet.
