.. in the event of an actual emergency.. you would have heard chickens clucking or dogs barking.

..And the people bowed and prayed... to the neon God they made...

You can sign up to get civil defense messages by email. I'm not sure exactly how, but they come from this email: email@blackboard.com

This morning's message:
This is a Civil Defense Message. This is a siren sounding information update for Friday, July 8 at 10:45 PM.

The recent island wide Civil Defense siren system sounding occurred due to a malfunction. There is no emergency. Again, the recent island wide Civil Defense siren system sounding occurred due to a malfunction. There is no emergency.

Civil Defense

Um. do they realize they don't have to repeat themselves in an email, we can just read it a second time?

Police: No emergency after malfunction triggers warning sirens

The tsunami sirens here are weak compared to the ones on the Oregon coast, those scare the crap out of people. A public notice was given right after the 1st that there were going to be additional test days. This one was a malfunction. The siren off Kahakai sounds weaker, it is starting to warble.

They are tsunami sirens, so if one is off the test schedule, go to another source and see if there is an earthquake reported. These tsunami sirens for the east side are mainly for west coast earthquakes, from Alaska to Chile. It will take a major earthquake plus over 9 hours to get here. The sirens would probably go off as soon as a major tsunami was confirmed on the way, giving several hours to get to higher ground.

"Aloha also means goodbye. Aloha!"

They are tsunami sirens..."

That is actually not true and a common mistake that people make. Those are emergency warning sirens. They are used to warn of any impending emergency not just a tsunami.

The following is an excerpt from the Hawaii.gov website. http://governor.hawaii.gov/newsroom/latest-news/hi-ema-news-release-june-1-2016-siren-and-emergency-alert-system-test/

"The siren test is a steady one minute tone on all sirens. The steady tone is used to alert the public to any emergency that may pose a threat to life and property. Besides natural hazards, the Emergency Alert System could be used for terrorist incidents or acts of war."

Edited to add the Hawaii.gov site info
