RE: Health Insurance - marcia - 02-26-2008

How is the hospital keeping up with the additional demand for service with so many people being forced to go to the emergency room for treatment? I would assume that the hospital is also having an issue with attracting docs. Do they have some method of triage for the more critical issues?

Is it that you can't find a doctor... or is it that Hilo is just to far to commute?[Wink]

*edit*

I know there are doctors in Hilo that are accepting patients.

I've ammended this accordingly

A survey done by the Commonwealth Fund's Commission on a High Performance Health System ranked Hawaii tops in the nation for access to health care. The findings, reported Wednesday in the Star-Bulletin, cited Hawaii's high rate of insured residents, largely because of the state's prepaid health care act and low unemployment.....But the national study didn't consider availability of doctors, Rasmussen, a Kailua orthopedic surgeon, and other doctors point out.
"In Hilo, you can't get a primary care doctor. Everyone there is booked and not taking new patients,"

Please list a general practice doctor that will accept new patients in Hilo and I'll make an appointment today!

I ammended my previous post.

Doctors are hard to come by and it sucks.

The island of Hawaii is the fastest growing in our state. It saw a fifteen percent jump in population just in the past six years. But the number of doctors is decreasing to dangerous levels and creating a real medical crisis.

My wife saw an article in Sunday's local paper that dealt with health insurance laws in each of the 50 states. If you go to http://healthinsuranceinfo.net/getinsured/hawaii/welcome/ you'll see there are several resources for more information on health insurance in Hawaii. There's a summary document here http://www.healthinsuranceinfo.net/statecoverageguides/HawaiiHealthInsuranceGuide.pdf of everything covered in the web site.

The document describes certain rights we have under federal laws that ensure we can continue health insurance coverage once we leave the workforce; you cannot be turned down for a pre-existing condition. Yes, if you're eligible (and most of us are) you're guaranteed that you can continue your insurance coverage once you move to Hawaii. The bottom line is that you have to have current group-coverage to get insurance but, if you don't have current group-coverage insurance, you can be excluded for pre-existing conditions.

I encourage everyone off-island to take a look at this web site and the material linked.

"Financially strapped states are looking to take away government health insurance and benefits from millions of Americans already struggling with a souring economy....

....review of the budgets in all 50 states reveals coverage would be eliminated for hundreds of thousands of poor children, disabled and the elderly. More than 10 million people would lose dental care, access to specialists, name-brand prescription drugs or other benefits. About 20 million could see their care jeopardized by further cuts to doctors' reimbursements.....

In Hawaii, care for Alzheimer's patients would be cut...
