I don't see how the TMT project can go forward in Hawaii, if there's a group with the funds and determination required to tie the project up in court indefinitely. Perhaps with a large, local Hawaiian voice in support to overwhelm and/or sway the protesters.

There is competition in astronomy, it's unavoidable and is actually a good thing. On the other hand, there is much more collaboration as that's the best way to actually make discoveries that can be confirmed.
Abraham's comments, if true, are reprehensible to me. We would not have got on well if I happened to support him at UKIRT.
And I have no idea why he thinks the TMT in La Palma will outperform the E-ELT in Chile. That's fanciful thinking.

Anyone notice the irony here? State moved almost immediately to contest the "travel ban" because it might "impact tourism" -- but when a major science project is in trouble, "it could take months to make a decision".

Too bad this project is going down the same road as the Ferry. Lots of time, $ and effort effort spent again, with no results.

kalakoa, I think one of the motivations of the "protectors" is a resentment of those who work for the scientific ventures such as the telescopes, and earn a good living in contrast to lives that have less hope and success such that are a goodly portion but certainly not all of the "protectors".
I also have to wonder about not about so much the competency of Hawaii State and County governments but their most basic motivations and values and real purposes.
Obviously this goes way beyond any single issue.
Thoughts?
