RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - kalakoa - 07-25-2017 nowhere near enough police officers patrolling Puna Symptom, not cause. Puna is "just" an "ag-zoned farming community". If it were actually recognized as a "bedroom community", it would require better police coverage. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-25-2017 Puna is "just" an "ag-zoned farming community". Yes, and we know how little theft and damage has been experienced by the papaya farmers, the coffee farmers, the flower farmers, the orange farmer in Ka'u... Four people are in a room and seven leave. How many have to enter again before it's empty? RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - kalakoa - 07-25-2017 theft and damage has been experienced by the papaya farmers, the coffee farmers ... These incidents are consistent with the land-use, and therefore a relevant use of limited HPD resources. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-25-2017 These incidents are consistent with the land-use Perhaps acceptable consequences of land use in Puna or Hawaii. I farmed for six years on the mainland without a single occurance of theft* or vandalism. I didn't lock my doors. I kept my truck keys in the ignition so they were always handy. The tractor started with a push button. * By humans. Deer and woodchucks were another story. Four people are in a room and seven leave. How many have to enter again before it's empty? RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - TomK - 07-25-2017 Kapoho Joe - I haven't found the info I was looking for but did ask (not HPD). This isn't current, but apparently, there are eight officers assigned to Puna and those on patrol is a floating number. I have a hard time believing this - eight officers to serve Puna 24-hours every day of the year - but will follow-up. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - Kapoho Joe - 07-25-2017 That's where I messed up Tom, it's 4 for upper and 4 for lower. 8 total and the punks know it. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - TomK - 07-25-2017 KJ - what I don't find credible is that only eight officers are assigned to Puna. I need to get this clarified. Even if it's four assigned to lower Puna and another four assigned to upper Puna, how on earth can you have enough on patrol at any given time over 24-hours? They can't work 24-hour shifts every day of the year. I suspect the number is Puna police officers on duty (as opposed to on patrol) at any given time, but I don't know that yet. I will definitely do my best to get more info. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - alaskyn66 - 07-26-2017 According to the HPD annual report, there are 59 sworn officers in Puna district. Puna District Commander: Capt. Samuel Jelsma Area: 683 square miles /Authorized sworn positions: 59 The district of Puna is larger in land mass than the entire island of Oahu or the cities of Los Angeles and Philadelphia combined. In terms of population, it has been described as the fastest-growing district on the island. Fifty-one police officers, six sergeants, one lieutenant and one captain position are des#65534;ignated for the Puna District. Additionally, the district has four volunteer reserve officers and three civilian staff members. The primary Puna District station is lo#65534;cated just outside P#257;hoa Village on Highway 130. The Kea‘au substation is located in Kea‘au town off Old Volcano Road. Community Policing Officers in Puna work with 10 Neighborhood Watch groups in crime prevention, community awareness and problem solving. The Community Policing officers continue working with local businesses and farmers with the Kea‘au Agriculture Watch in response to agricultural thefts and illegal hunting in the Kea‘au area. Some of the largest landowners and farm groups in the area are part of the watch. Pg. 28 How many are working at any givin time is anybody guess..but it's my understanding that when you are a cop.. you are always on call. RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - kalakoa - 07-26-2017 there are 59 sworn officers in Puna For an 8-hour shift x 5 days/week - vacation/sick/holiday, I think you end up dividing by 5: 59 / 5 = 11.8 officers on duty at any given time. If it takes 4 officers to respond to a traffic stop (as seems to be "the custom") that means HPD has the capacity to handle 3 incidents at a time, or once incident per about 228 square miles, against a mostly unarmed populace. I'm sure someone can find fault with the above numbers, but even if they're off by a factor of two or three, police coverage is still spread pretty thin, with hundreds of miles of unpaved roads and no streetlights... RE: Watch Out - racing on Red Road.. - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 07-26-2017 police coverage is still spread pretty thin A number of years ago (10-15) I spoke with someone whose cousin was a police officer in Ka'u Distict. She said if her cousin had the night shift, he was the only patrolman on duty. When he responded to a call he wouldn't get out of the car. He considered it too dangerous. I'm not sure it he's still on the police force, but somehow I doubt it. Four people are in a room and seven leave. How many have to enter again before it's empty? |
