Agree and i think the word you meant to use was particulate???. If anyone has a hobby or simply wants to breathe fresh after a long day of dusty stuffs, check out the 3M 7500 .. This is even better than the 6 series that are available at ACE etc.

eta. 7500 is pro level for dust and actual work...Get the best if you are freaked out by whatever else.

Posted as a Public Service .

And yeah those pink, p100 filters rock and last forever. Also available with thin charcoal. I forget the number.

What’s interesting about masks is even if I’m wearing one and the other person’s wearing one, I can still smell what they had for breakfast.

n95 masks are recommended for covid.

An activated charcoal mask with chemicals added to stop radioactivity is the wrong mask.

Yes, False Security, any mask or filter for that point is only as good as its rating if and when complete perimeter seal is achieved. Dust masks, no matter what they " N " rating are only as good as the perimeter seal.

Eta, get a 3M 7500 mask, fit it and then block the intake and inhale, mask sucks against your face like a dive mask. Combined with p100 filters, this can be ur masked Utopia unless u wanna block eyes too.

Soft mask N95 is great but please people know, your in and exhale always follow path of least resistance.

I.e . AROUND the perimeter, not through the filter. Its just physics.

I wondered that as well. A simple Google search revealed it's because those molecules are way, WAY smaller than the Covid virus.

Of course, that hasn't stopped some people from claiming that this "proves" masks don't work. Guess they don't have access to readily available information...

Sometimes all this Covid mask theorizing reminds me of early in the eruption when there was debate about which masks would protect you.

The government passed out some particulate masks which were good but depending on your exposure to the ash, were not practical for sleeping with. Many taped up their windows and otherwise sealed their homes. For those of us in the immediate area, we needed more than particulate masks, we needed gas masks.

Then there was debate about which 3M cartridge was best - 60926, 60928 or 60929. However, the part that many missed was the fact that given the heavy usage, the cartridges needed to be changed very frequently, sometimes daily.

Even with the right cartridge and spares, the need for a full mask was overlooked as we concentrated on our lungs and neglected our eyes. At one point Hilo was sold out of swim goggles!

I remember the National Guard showing up with these massive football helmet sized masks and how seeing them really underscored the seriousness of the situation.

Covid created a similar scramble for the proper PPE with disposable surgical masks vs t-shirt 'gaiters' vs cloth masks vs N95 when the gold standard was really P100 which was overlooked and therefore readily available throughout the pandemic.

Again, your need for PPE and what type was determined by your exposure level and personal risk assessment.

The takeaway from all of this is to do your own due diligence and not to let anyone else do it for you.

'Stay Safe' indeed.

Back then I finally gave up arguing with people. The real good respirators come in different sizes and shapes. OSHA requires yearly training and a fit test. I was required to shave my beard every year for the fit test and required to keep shaving equipment in my locker in case I needed to wear a respirator at work. The training was so you could select the proper cartridge for the hazard you were facing.

The respirator MyManao has chosen would work better if he strapped it to his butt.

... would work better if he strapped it to his butt.

I might pay to see that.  Somewhere between $3-$5.

I'd be happy to upload one, but Obie's face is in the way.

And, just so as to set the record straight, I grabbed that link without concern for the exact model, mine's a 3503, with those stylish 2091 filters rated for moisture and dust, and yeah I got several filters for the various applications I've been using throughout the years. Either out at the eruption site where the concern is filtering specific gases, to working the farm and dealing with foliar spraying, or in the shop's paint booth.

And, for those that would use such a mask, the exhale port has no filtration, and as such if you are concerned about it it's a good idea to add a layer of something over the port to act as one.

I'll get back to you on the pics Edge, as soon as Obie is done..
