RE: Fireworks explosion kills three women on Oahu - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 01-04-2025

Governor Green humbly asks that people with illegal fireworks turn them in:

“I would just ask everyone humbly, please pause on shooting any of these fireworks off until the firefighters get a better grip on how they can contain the risk,” Green said. “Please make sure you take us up on our offer to go through amnesty programs. We’ll take them back and take them off people’s hands even if they got them illegally. That’s okay.

And then:

“At the end of the day, it’s gonna have to be a personal decision that members of the community will have to decide,” Green said.

So the solution is for people who bunkerbust their neighborhood with the sound of bombs going off, frighten their neighbors’ dogs and cats, disturb the peace, without asking anyone for permission or applying for a special use permit - - is to politely request they voluntary do what they think is right. With humility.

The governor’s request might be a case of mistaken context.
Or failure to read the room.

My initial reaction was to agree with you.  However, his anger is palpable in the news reports so containing that anger like this, for this announcement shows discipline and forethought. I think that is precisely because he reads the room better than most transplants. That may even be how he became Gov? You can always add salt to the pot later but you can't take it back.

Always start with diplomacy.

The this announcement shows discipline and forethought.

I considered that possibility too.
Consider this.
Your neighbor in HPP has blasted off fireworks for many years, days before the holidays, intermittently for days afterward.  You decide to walk over a week before and politely request that this year, could they perhaps maybe limit the festivities to legal fireworks for a few hours on the actual 4th & News Years Eve?  What do you think their response would be?

Governor Green is using this approach on thousands of people. And the response would most likely be the same, times thousands.

What do you think their response would be?

Somewhere between "cut you with machete" and "burn your house down".

RE: Fireworks explosion kills three women on Oahu - HiloJulie - 01-04-2025

"There is nothing cultural about this tragedy (fireworks, profit, "human sacrifice"). And it certainly isn't Hawaiian."

Fireworks in Hawaii on New Years Eve is completely a cultural norm to Hawaii. In this case, that cultural norm got way out of hand. And this is not the first time it got way out of hand. Just the first time it became a tragedy.

"Governor Green humbly asks that people with illegal fireworks turn them in"

"Always start with diplomacy."

Maybe the Gov might consider the same approach with the meth epidemic and users?

What do you think their response would be?

You're too smart to think that yours is in any way a reasonable, logical, or persuasive comparison. It's Jackfruit to Poha Berries. I'm not the Governor of the State of Hawaii. I do not wield the ability to persuade with force of arms.  I do not have the bully pulpit.  Maybe if you ask the question where Josh Green goes next door to his neighbor and makes that request, we might be getting closer to a reasonable, logical, persuasive comparison.  I will submit that if he did do that, my gut tells me that his neighbor would be very likely to comply.

He's trying to move a state full of people, not just one neighbor.  Someone "reading the room" would easily recognize that authoritarians are losing power just about everywhere.  It's time for a more respectful, less authoritarian approach and for decisions made with logic instead of fear and emotion. That's the room I'm in anyway and I really hate the fireworks. Plenty.

any way a reasonable, logical, or persuasive comparison.

I think in the case of an issue like fireworks, where emotion is at play more than logic, the messenger is less of a factor than the audience when it comes to moving the meter.

The ultimate factor to achieve a righteous and sustainable outcome, has to be the message itself.  Seems like Josh has a pretty good bead on the big picture.

I once again site anyone? anyone? Ferris Bueller’s Day Off as the ultimate example for comparison between messenger-message-audience:

RE: Fireworks explosion kills three women on Oahu - HiloJulie - 01-05-2025

As for the message, I think the Gov has said what needs to be said and SHOULD be the only message as shown in this clip: (contains terminology some may not like to hear, but is reality)

As for how the message is received, I defer to HOTPE's Ferris Bueller's Day Off example.
