RE: Lamont's latest - pslamont - 04-12-2006 More adventures... Today we took the three big pigs to market ... to the butcher. Does that make me a real farmer now? LOL. They will call me and let me know if they are interested in buying one; if not my friends and neighbors are getting a LOT of pork. We moved the baby pigs down to the big pig pen and they are loving it. We are also preparing a field for Coffee. A friend has gotten me 10 plants and says we can get all we want so I am setting up for 100. That should be another interresting adventure in 3 or 4 years! WE have planted hundreds of cuttings so far this week and have many more to go. I f anyone is bored or has teenagers that need punishing...... well, I gotta be hopeful. Really, it is all coming together. i go through a couple boxes a day if I can and it's all getting put away. In between there are dinners a couple nights a week (I do love to cook), fields, and it seems I am just busy busy busy every day. Life is good. I love the rain forest!!!! RE: Lamont's latest - lkrider - 04-13-2006 Hey Pam, In case you haven't seen it yet, here is an article on some ladies and their Hilo-side coffee business: http://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/articles/2006/04/13/features/features01.txt Sounds like you can be part of that "reawakening" with your coffee trees! Linda in CO RE: Lamont's latest - wyatt - 04-15-2006 Dear Pam, I wanted to thank you so much for dirt and plants you gave us. We really enjoyed the tour of your beautiful property. A special thanks for getting out there in the rain. We have already been planting. The house has really come together. Looks great. Your hard work shows in the quality and charm of your home. Maholo Wyatt RE: Lamont's latest - pslamont - 04-17-2006 You Have to be able to LAUGH! I occurs to me that we haven't had a completely dry day for over three weeks. It should have occcurred to me earlier today but.... Being the independent woman that I am, I decided to drive the truck up to the woodshet at the cabin to take the last of last years nice seasoned wood for our fireplace. This required driving through a pasture tall in grass but I managed to get up the 500 yards or so without event, backed up to the woodshed and proceded to take an hour to every so slowly but determinedly move all the logs into the truck. Back in the truck I went and, lo and behold, I was sunken in over a foot of mud. No amount of digging, piling branches and 4-wheeling did any good. The good old Toyota truck dug in tight. With no one else on the ranch today, there was no use trying to drive the tractor up to rescue it; it's a two man operation no matter how you try. Not to be daunted, I just loaded four logs into my arms and started the walk down a trail through the forest to the pasture where our home is. WHOA... do you know how easy it is to slip in the mud when your arms are full? I went a$$ over teakettle into the mud. Luckily I had the good sends to throw the logs away from me on the way down. So, now covered in mud from my ankles to my neck, I picked up my muddy logs and trudged down to the house. Apparently I was quite a site all covered in mud; the chickens went wild around me and the dogs got stirred up by the chickens. Fortunately, I did no more falling; just a little slipping and sliding. So as you settle in for your night, think of me covered in mud, chased by chickens and dogs.... only to land in a wonderful bubble bath with a great cup of tea. Gotta take those lemons and make lemonade. Lest you be conserned for me, I am fine. I carry a cell phone if I really get into trouble. My gardner Alex will be here tomorrow and we will manage to dig the truck out I am sure. How can I laugh? Heck, it's all happening in paradise!!!!! Pam Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! RE: Lamont's latest - pslamont - 04-19-2006 Spent a wonderful day today. Planted the first 12 coffee trees. We are using a tractor with an auger, but the grass roots are 18 inches deep so we do a lot of hand stripping to get the holes in. Then, since we decided to go totally organic, we placed a shovel full of pig poop, two to three shovels of balck cinder and then refilled the holes with a mixture of the clay-like soil and peat moss. Each hole is 3 feet deep. The trees are only about 1 to 2 feet tall,so it should take a season for the roots to make it down to the "fertilizer" which should be well cured by then. We expect to get another hundred or so trees this weekend. I am told that green tea does well up here too and we may need to plant a field of that too. Gotta learn to be a country girl! After a day in dirt, pig poop, peat moss and dragging around on the tractor, I sure did cherish my bubble bath... Aloha. Pam Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! RE: Lamont's latest - Kapohocat - 04-24-2006 I heard green tea does well as hedges? -Cat RE: Lamont's latest - David D - 04-24-2006 Hi Pam, Try this web site: http://www.hawaiiteasociety.org./ Good Luck! David D RE: Lamont's latest - pslamont - 04-25-2006 Thanks for the info! I signed up for the Hawaii Tea Society newsletter; I am sure it will be informative. I also got brave and sent away for a couple packages of tea seeds. I understand germination is only about 40% so I will be patient. With any luck we will be gathering our next supply of coffee plants this afternoon. Wish me luck. Aloha. Pam Just another day in P A R A D I S E !!
