I remember being woken up in the middle of the night, back in 1975, to the sound of our neighbor, Helen "Omah" Cassidy, telling us that Mauna Loa was erupting. From our parlor window on the dry side of Waimea we had a clear view of the flow coming down the North slope of Mauna Loa, but we all piled into "Omah's" Jeep Cherokee and away we went up to Saddle Rd for a closer look...

By the time we got past Kilohana Girl Scout Camp there was no place along the road where we could pull off and watch because the sides of the road were crowded with cars, so we kept going until we reached Bobcat Trail, where we finally found a spot off the roadway.

I missed the 1984 flow as I was stationed at Ft Benning, but mom gave me the news when I called home.

Ah... The memories...

I always figured that we'd see more volcanic destruction than we have recently. I guess we've been lucky.
