Here's a link to a PDF file detailing each state's statutes covering tire disposal.

Interesting note in the Hawaii section: ". . . Shredded tires are sold to a coal plant for use as fuel".

aloha,
Gene

I bought a piece of property here, that had, un-known to me, 300 tires dumped on it.

Trying to make lemon-aid from lemons I sold the tires to a recycler. But he really wasn't interested in any "belted tires". But I had enough non-belted tires to make it a break even deal.

He told me that they used them for everything from roads to sportcourts etc..

Now I don't know if he was just working me on the belted tires or not but it does make sense that they would be harder to recycle.

Blessings,
dave

When they shred the tire down into shake, the steel left behind by the belt is undesireable. I thought that the County should buy a tire shredder and just give the stuff away and pave roads with it. They can also mix pulverized glass in asphalt as well.

We use them for gardens. (Thank you Hooligal for the beginning and the idea in general!) Stack them up - fill them with compost. I put mulch on top to keep flies from compost. Hooligal and I got some great things growing! Basil anyone????

She stacked rocks around the first set so you dont see the tires. We took the idea and ran!

I read somewhere that they were making artificial reefs out of old tires as well.

"Stack them up - fill them with compost."

So, are they like giant planters?

The auto tire artificial reef off the eastern seaboard were an abject failure. The bindings on the tire bundles broke or degraded and a couple million tire carcasses are now adrift on the sea floor. Big headache trying to clean that mess up now.

After I read this and then;

Lee DeJongh punapetah

Quite true but not strictly Amerikan. Remember the following?
Genghis Khan
The vikings
Virtually all the medieval and renaissance Popes and kings
Mohammed (read his history. It's got it all)
Shaka Zulu
The middle eastern Biblical Kingdoms
The Egyptian Dynasties
The Plains Indians
The Aztecs
The Incas
The Mayans
The original Crossers of the Bering Strait(they destroyed an entire ecosystem)
the original Australian Aborigines 50,000 years ago( they also destroyed an entire ecosystem)
ditto the Maori in New Zealand
Ditto the original Hawaiians
And lastly but not least
King Kamahameha

Blood, sex, war, greed, lust etc at all too human.

Buddha teaches us to put these aside.

Peace be unto you.

reading this I think the rest of you are blind

If you look for your dreams in a pocket full of gold, you must feel guilty.
I like punapetah are happy with living the dream with the silver lining.

Anyone having Deja Vu?

Anyone having Deja Vu?

Well, I dunno if my version of deja vu is anything like yours, but the other day when I saw the word Amerika in this thread I did suddenly flash back to an international poetry-forum where I was quite active for a number of years -- Brits, Aussies, Canadian-nationals primarily, many of whom were in the education field, and several of whom were scattered around the world as far afield as Korea (ackkk!), the UAE (ackkk! ackkk!), and France of all places (ackkk! ackkk! ackkk!)

Ha! Lots and lots of political head-bangin', believe me. But no one took offense.

Annnyhow, my reason for having brought this up just now is the fact that in much of the world, those with a bone to pick, or a tongue firmly planted in cheek, refer to us as (now, promise not to take offense -- the only reaction I'm going to allow here today is a smirk and/or deep belly laugh) --merkins - something that if you're unfamiliar with the term can most likely be found in Wikipedia.
