My question was whether President-Elect Obama is American. That has been esablished beyond a reasonable doubt, and pushing non-substantive themes such as the suggestion that Obama was not American (and perhaps even un-American) may be one reason why the opposition lost so handily. People want answers now -- not slanderous, unsubstantiated nonsense.

No, my question was whether he would be recognized as "Hawaiian". My answer to that is yes, he is Hawaiian. By the way, he supports the Akaka Bill in princple. That bill will provide certain rights for NATIVE HAWAIIANS. Obama would not meet the definition of Native Hawaiian under any version of that definition. However, under any other definition, the man is Hawaiian.

It is important to distinguish between Hawaiians and Native Hawaiians. I am all American and part Native American (I do not strongly associate with my tribe, or any tribe --tribal associations are atavistic in my view, thwart human progress and suppress what we have in common in favor of what we do not have in common).

So, when people tell you that you are not Hawaiian, even when you are born in Hawaii and even when you are President of the United States of American (including the State of Hawaii), they are wrong. What they mean is that you are not Native Hawaiian. That is a completely different matter.

Barack Obama -- An American and a Hawaiian.
Glen -- An American, part Native American, and someday a Hawaiian by choice.

Its funny how in Texas all you had to do was live there to call yourself a Texan. Of course after you leave you still call yourself a Texan.

I can't resist the Texan thing. I was born and raised in Texas, having had family there since 1852, but live elsewhere by choice. Am I still a Texan? My relatives all say "yes." They do not, however, consider any of the Bush family to be Texan, referring to them as money-grubbing oil opportunists. (Oddly, some of those relatives who make such references to the Bushes have voted for them. My dear mother, the matriarch, has never voted for a Bush, always referring to the current president as "that idiot who let the ranch roads go to hell when he was governor.")

Bringing this back to Hawaii, I would caution the president-elect's supporters on the use of the term "Hawaiian." Certain elements in this state become upset if anyone other than their particular ethnic group use that designation, with or without the qualifying "native." When my Texan relatives asked me if I was going to become Hawaiian, I had to explain to them that I would never have the genetic credentials for such a designation. Neither does Mr. Obama.

Cheers,
Jerry

Hawaiian is something or someone originated from Hawaii.

Guarantee you ask any Hawaiian that has moved to Texas... that he isn't a "Texan" and that he will still call himself a "Hawaiian"[Big Grin]

I know a "Native Hawaiian" living Texas, and he calls himself a Hawaiian-Texan.

It appears to me to be an attempt to change the definition of the term. One that is not working out very well.

The correct term for someone who's roots go back before Statehood would be "Native Hawaiian".

So again, the states Name needs to change, or everyone living is Hawaii are Hawaiians.

At least that is my opinion.

Hawaii was called "Hawaii" long before statehood [}Smile]

Would a Texan move onto a Cherokee Indian Reservation and then call himself an "Indian"?

Obama is an Oahuan, or possibly a Honoluluan. We are mostly Punans, Punatics, or possibly pahoadillos.

He would only become an Indian if he became a permanent resident of the country India, like an Indian becomes an American. We don't have a U.S. state named India. Calling Native Americans Indians is a European invention. I believe the Native Americans referred to themselves by their tribal nations. In Florida, the Seminoles aren't going to let you move onto their reservation. If they let you become Seminole they would have to give you a "share", which is, I believe, about 3K per child or adult.
