RE: Where to Dine on Valentine's Day - John S. Rabi - 01-08-2009 quote:Make sure you are there early when they open. Both the service and food deteriorate as the evening goes on. It's a husband & wife team doing EVERYTHING, the only help they have is a dishwasher. Aloha, John S. RE: Where to Dine on Valentine's Day - kani-lehua - 01-09-2009 thanks. was just talking about traveling to kona. will keep hayama in mind. Nihon: I like the staff, and the lanai is the only place to eat in Hilo overlooking the bay. But, in the last decade the place has physically deteriorated and is in dire need of upkeep. The best time to go is lunchtime, sit on the uncomfortable lanai furniture, have the "Businessman's lunch" and enjoy a sunny day overlooking the bay. Seaside - the fish is very good (if a bit unimaginative), and the ambience is a bit sterile. Good for large parties though. Cafe Concerto is a much more authentic Italian experience that Pescatore. Just an Italian man, cooking basic, authentic dishes. Great if you like pasta. Take Kilauea Av away and you could be in Europe. Sombat's is my favourite Thai in Hilo. If you can get past the dismal old plaza exterior, inside it is very cheerful. I think specifically for Valentine's I would try Cafe Concerto, or maybe Jay's if money was no object. Oh and I think of the above places, only Nihon is licenced. Jays and Cafe Concerto are next to a wine store though (Grapes) so you could BYO. RE: Where to Dine on Valentine's Day - heyyou - 01-09-2009 The lady at Ratana's Green Papaya Salad stand at Old Town Pahoa and Hilo Farmers' Market, hands out Sombat's menus when ask about Thai food for other than market days. RE: Where to Dine on Valentine's Day - missydog1 - 01-09-2009 Sombat's is BYOB but they don't charge corkage and will open it for you. They only have a few tables so don't tell everyone! There's s liquor store on Kamehameha sort of next to Ken's. For authentic family type Japanese food, go to Restaurant Miwa in Hilo Bay Shopping Center tucked in behind Kopekope ... next to the Time Warner store, if that helps, at Kilauea and Kekuanoa. When we've gone we've been the only haole's in the place. When most only Japanese eat there, I think that says something about the authenticity. It is not fancy dining and there is no view. For view go to Miyo's in Wailoa Lagoon area, which someone already mentioned. I am just learning about Cafe Concerto! Where on Kilauea is it? (what cross street?) RE: Where to Dine on Valentine's Day - kani-lehua - 01-10-2009 i'm dying for some good japanese food and will try the restaurants mentioned. off topic/original post, sorry! cafe concerto: 808 kilauea ave. 934-0312 located on the opposite side of cafe 100 which is at 969 kilauea ave. if that helps. We had such high hopes too, especially since the last time we ate lunch at Pescatore it was virtually inedible, so we were really looking for decent Italian food. I think they must vary a lot depending on who is cooking. I just had the eggplant parmigiana at Aloha Luigi's and it was excellent as always, but they are a daytime sort of restaurant, rather than a date night out place. They do use fresh local ingredients, bake their own bread, have no fear of garlic, and the new patio is quite nice. I wish Hilo or Pahoa had an old school hippie style breakfast place where everyone from my vegan husband to my omnivore self could get a good meal. Pahoa Village Cafe has a good reputation but the whole breakfast menu is egg based, so there is nothing my husband can eat there. Just one sauteed tofu dish with big piles of fried potatoes and onions would mean we could eat there. I'm sure there are enough vegans and vegetarians in Puna to make it a worthwhile addition to the menu. Carol RE: Where to Dine on Valentine's Day - kani-lehua - 01-10-2009 carol: http://www.happycow.net/north_america/usa/hawaii/hilo/index.html the link only lists: charity's veganfest at 330 kamehameha ave. call to make sure they are still open. also listed is: soontaree's deli on w. lanikaula st.
