I second Cheesecake Factory...
There is one in Waikiki that we frequent...

And come on Blake, this is a fun thread. Most if not all people on this thread are from the mainland and have been to great mom and pop shops. Heck most are from CA and we started that trend! We set the bar and all others have tried to imitate and cant. Lets keep this thread fun and knock off the "elitest" posts/opinions...

In the olive garden genre... the Mimi's and my favorite Hoff's Hut - great bakery. Mortons or a Ruth's Chris wouldn't be bad either for that occasional steak urge

Okay fine Doob I do kind of like those little fried pieces of "chicken" and the waffle fries at chick-fil-a. Oh and the paper thin tortilla chips at Chili's are good. The onion loaf at Tony Roma's is quite tasty as well. Does that work for ya man? LOL.

That said the only one of these items that has passed my "elitist" lips in years is the waffle fries.

You people crack me up... going on and on about your favorite chain restaurants. Eight is right, be careful what you wish for.

We need more creative and inventive chefs who can make good things that the masses can afford with local ingredients.

Pizza sounds to be a rather strange example here, but let's take Big Island Pizza. They keep their prices as low as possible but their standards on the food are incomparable. Jim grows his own herbs, tomatoes etc. cures his own meats and sausages, bakes their own breads and makes every thing on his menu from scratch, with very high standards. The only thing that comes out of their restaurant that they do not make from scratch is the roasted turkey for sandwiches. Now they are competing with two "big box" pizza places. We can choose to support the local guy with the commitment to quality or we an order from Pizza Hut. To me it is a "no-brainer".

Why are you guys dreaming of bland restaurant chains? Just wondering as I tend to avoid them as I generally find local eateries are much better and tend to use fresher local ingredients instead of the processed food the chains have shipped to every restaurant to assure consistent blandness.

My daughter is moving here in Dec. and her chef/restaurant manager boyfriend will be coming in August. He is Peruvian and I really hope he will open a Latin American restaurant with good regional cuisines. I also would love to have a good Greek/Mediterranean restaurant here.

I remember there used to be a Peruvian restaurant in Hilo, I think it was owned by the "crepes lady" but she had some mexican dishes too.

As far as local up and comers, I drifted away from Maui full time about the time of "Roys" He was into pacific rim vertical food, stacking it for presentation.

What's and who is hot now for us shut ins or weed whacker bound? Its like having kids all over again - grin

Most offbeat place "memphis" as in the architects usage, "not a square window or server in the place man", retro beatnik style

Costa Mesa ca next door to the "anti mall"

There was a restaurant in Charlotte about thirty years ago called "Josh's". They featured an entre called the "Big Spud". They somehow got the biggest Russet potatoes I've ever seen, and had dozens of fillings and side dishes to go in, on and with them. Kind of a potatoe salad bar.

Yum Yum; Etnic Irish, I guess. I still do baked potatoes as an entre today.

I avoid any restaurant franchises. I try and make cooking an adventure, and expect no less when I occasionally eat out.
