Daniel, It was exactly the atmosphere we wanted, the food was just delicious and the wait persons were excellent, too. None of us had been there before, and the day was really beautiful, so we were able to enjoy the grounds before being seated, which added much to the whole experience.

It couldn't have been nicer.

Perfect.

Dee

Another add: Ohana Grill next door to Magic Pan has some good dishes (not overly creative), medium prices & the very unique Kikado (sp?) Bldg decor to add a very nice ambiance to the dining.

Also second Miyos, good views, very good food, usually creative specials; Pescatore, cafe Pesto, (these two have ambiance in the dining hall nice fare, but are not overly creative, and pricey for what you get)
Very good & more creative fare, with lower ambiance: Kaleos (Only one on this list not in Hilo), Hilo Bay Cafe, & Garden Snack Club - which has some very creative, very fresh Thai inspired foods (Honolulu friends with FWS always wanna go there),
Good food with great bird watching: Seaside (across from 4 mile beach - James Kealoha/Carlsmith Beach Parks) - only if you get a porch window seat to watch the egrets land (food OK, but the price...but the egrets are fun to watch)
Coconut Grill can be hit n miss, & for the higher end, not overly creative, with a diner feel (but it is fun to look at the tsunami heights on the window.

Nihon can have great view seats, but also can have tour buses of people & the food is weary on those days (standard Japanese fare, Miyos is by far the better)

I love Paolo's. My favorite. Now watch the Kaleo fans jump me.

They can jump on me too, I eat at Paolo's every time I'm in Puna. I have known him since he was the Chef at Palm Cafe in Kona back in the early '90s. He is eclectic but he is an exceptional chef.

John, ummmm, with Jimbo, the restaurants are chosen for quantity over quality.... so when the 2 of us are dining out in Pahoa, we go for Thai... ETA: 2 of the best Thai on island are there...)

Gotta admit, I have rarely eaten out sans Jimbo in Pahoa (have many times in Hilo).... so I have yet to even try Paolo's! Maybe I should make a trip out there!

Carey,

At Paolo's start with a Mediterranean salad. The portions are not huge, so order a side of Lasagne to share for the large appetite. I love his homemade pastas. Seafood w/ black pasta. mmmm...BTW, it is BYOB.

"Insalata Caprese" as it is known, and it's heavenly. Dan is right, some of his dishes are not huge portions, but some others like the Braised Lamb and the Chicken Marsala are.
PS. Make sure you leave room for his Tiramisu! (Heaven in your mouth!)

Where is Paolo's?

Dee

RE: Thank you dinner - DanielP - 01-06-2010

Downtown Pahoa. Across from Luquin's, next to Nings. Poor signage.
