RE: Sheep Attacked - asly - 12-02-2009 There's wild donkeys on the big island? I didn't know that. We have wild horses here in MT, what a pain they are, they tend to carry a lot of sickness with them. Many of them are in the Pryor Mountains near popular hiking trails, they are the worst camp robbers, coming right up to you and try to snatch your sandwich right out of your hand, and they kick and bite. Maybe Pam doesn't want guard donkeys.... course I've seen llamas be pretty darn mean too. I'm glad to hear some of the lost sheep have returned. RE: Sheep Attacked - tada - 12-02-2009 they got donkeys on the Big Island but not in Puna even with so much greenery to chomp on. what's the problem- parasites? maybe they prefer spiny keawe pods[?] Other people want to make friends- I just want to make money. James Cramer RE: Sheep Attacked - dmbwest - 12-10-2009 Heartbroken to read all this Pam ... A nice dog to consider down the road ... http://www.akc.org/breeds/anatolian_shepherd_dog/ Lots of amazing tales of these dogs protecting their flocks. aloha, pog RE: Sheep Attacked - Radiopeg - 12-11-2009 Hope your flock continues to strengthen and grow. Llamas seemed to do well on the wet California coast. And heck they will stand up to coyotes. Back when I first had chickens I had raised them from babies, and all had names. I spent so much time with them. One night raccoons came in and gutted most of them. Not eaten, either. Not all animals kill only for food. I currently have chickens here in WA state. We have had some skunk problems, but so far my girls have been high enough perched. Nothing lost but squawks and a few feathers. We started catching those little beasts in traps and dispatching them with a .22. Our live stock is part of our lives. RE: Sheep Attacked - mella l - 12-11-2009 The Anatolian shepherd dogs are beautiful animals, they were guarding the home where we found our two domestic Bengal kitties, far out in the country. These dogs were so beautiful, so very calm and confident, rather majestic also, if I had the room I would love to share my home with one. mella l "New York London Paris Hilo" RE: Sheep Attacked - TheYogi - 12-20-2009 Pam, Sorry to hear of your loss. If I remember right, we live close together (near Glenwood). This morning three dogs (my girlfriend saw them but they were gone before I got there with my gun) killed the last two of our surviving chickens. Previously they decimated our duck and chicken flock. My guess is they are the same culprits. At least one had a collar and they fled down to fern forest. Rest assured I feel your pain and am doing everything I can to put bullets in these dogs. RE: Sheep Attacked - kani-lehua - 12-20-2009 according to our neighbor, here in fern forest, there's a pack of wild dogs--dogs that got dumped off. there are also many, many loose dogs that the owners let roam the neighborhood. don't know what happened to at least 5 of one neighbor's dogs. but, rumor has it that the feral pigs got to them. there's also a guy here that supposedly has coralled some 160 feral pigs. calls his place a "sanctuary." he'll kill anyone or anything that harms "his" pigs. thankfully, our chickens are still safe. The remaining herd is doing really well. Although skittish about getting out of the first couple pastures, they have responded to care and should all be fine now. We are looking for a male (intact) that is colored with black hoofs for breeding. Would like to "borrow" him or buy for breeding. If anyone knows of an available guy, let me know! Mahalo again for all your hood thoughts. ![]() RE: Sheep Attacked - kani-lehua - 12-22-2009 glad to hear the good news! If so, what do you do with the wool? We had Katadin hair sheep and they just shedded out. Enjoy the day! Ann Back to blogging at http://crazypineappledream.blogspot.com |
