RE: Barking Dogs - Brad W - 04-01-2007 Check closely the surroundings of the habitual barkers and you'll usually find clueless, classless and rude owners are neglecting them with: no water, no food, no shelter, no exercise, no training, or all of the above. It isn't the dog's fault. It may be a cultural thing, but it surely isn't a good thing. Those who resist change for the sake of resisting change are laughable. RE: Barking Dogs - Carey - 04-01-2007 If some one has a barking dog for the protection of their property, then they should welcome the concern of their neighbors, when they call at all hours of the day or night to check that no one is stealing their stuff, no? If you know where the dog lives, you probably can find out the phone #. Of course, a concerned neighbor calling the police because they think the neighbor has a theft in progress can also show your concern (or their lack there of) Just a thought... It did work on a clueless neighbor on the mainland, but then you have to be willing to seem to the clueless as a slightly odd neighbor as they will think that you the clueless one concerned about the clueless' stuff! Other neighbors confided in us that they had had it with the dogs, but just didn't know how to approach the clueless. If you are upset, they get defensive. I found if you are overly concerned for their welfare, at all hours, they seem to get the connection that their dog barking will cause you to call, concerned that someone is stealing their stuff. Our neighbor did get annoyed with the calls, but the dogs stopped barking after a while. Seems the owner could be trained! RE: Barking Dogs - Beachboy - 04-01-2007 I understand one's annoyance with a neighbor who doesn't control his dogs from barking all night. But sometimes a mongoose sets them off barking, or a feral pig(Which HPP has lots). I think the whole notion of one getting his panties in a knot over a dog's obsessive barking seems a bit trivial. I for one come from Kapahulu in Honolulu and I'd hear sirens all nights, people yelling, and young kids driving like there is no tomorrow. I'm sure the majority of you come from a similiar enviornment, just different city. So why all the fuss? If you're new to the islands, I'd just "bite the bullet", and buy some 'ear plugs'. You don't wanna go knocking on the door of your neighbor at 3 in the morning asking him to shut his dogs up....no matter what! Edited by - beachboy on 04/02/2007 08:55:17 RE: Barking Dogs - Brad W - 04-01-2007 Please, please, please, give me a break. Do you really think that anyone who lives with barking neighbor dogs 24/7 gives the first consideration to that person's home being ripped off? How would we know? The dogs bark constantly. I have three big dogs. They woof when someone comes calling when I'm home, they bark bigtime at people who show up when I'm away. They're TRAINED. People who allow their dogs to bark to the point that they destroy the experience for all of their neighbors are thoughtless jerks. RE: Barking Dogs - Carey - 04-01-2007 Brad, I agree with you. These people probably do not really have the dogs for "protection". I also know that we had a neighbor with 2 constant barkers that was inscenced at the idea of controlling their dogs, as 'they were for protection.' They were beligerent to all neighbors that mentioned their dogs. I merely showed them the that I shared their concern, whenever their dogs barked for an hour or so. Beachboy, dogs will bark at radom things, but mongoose & such moving through a property do not trigger hours of non-stop barking, usually minutes of alert barking. Living near a constant barker is just like living right next to a firehouse that has constant callouts. Owners can and should take responsiblity for their animals. Most constant barkers are just bored dogs that are acting out for attention. They can be trained, but only if the owner has enough care for their animals. Sometimes that care has to be fostered. RE: Barking Dogs - Fishboy - 04-01-2007 I agree with Carey and Brad. Sorry, Beachboy, but I just can't imagine NOT responding to a dog that disrupts an otherwise peaceful neighborhood. Like Carolann R said, after only a few minutes our brains can tune out a constant drone such as an engine, but the sharp discordance of bark-bark-bark-bark-bark makes my blood pressure go jump-jump-jump-jump.... I just wouldn't stand for that and I'd be talking it over with the owner. We have rights as property owners, but those rights come with responsibilities to our neighbors. If you don't respect your neighbors, they won't respect you. Aloha, Brian RE: Barking Dogs - Beachboy - 04-02-2007 quote: Please try to understand this problem. It's one I've seen played over and over again, and not just here either! Same situation on Oahu, Maui and every other island I have lived on! Yes, I agree that people should be considerate of their neighbors. But who "sets the bar", and claims enough is enough? What I'm saying is I have seen people complain about a neighbors's dog, and then see the complainer get a major ass kicking by the dog owner who is having a bad day! I for one don't like to see that happen, and I have seen it happen way to many times too in this land of Aloha! Edited by - beachboy on 04/02/2007 09:32:07 RE: Barking Dogs - holahan - 04-02-2007 aloha all, interesting topic. i have a clueless "lonely old lady," neighbor with the requisite 10 cats and 6 dogs. her house smells like urine, and her dogs bark CONSTANTLY. i can't step out into my yard without her mutts complaining. now i know its not their fault, as she is paranoid and clueless, but I have to endure the constant barking. so what do i do? well, aside from wanting to put rat poison in some hamburger (for her, not the dogs! ;-) ) i endure it. i would love to call the humane society on her, but i know that will probably harm the dogs more than her. so, i live with it.... its a shame that people in hawai'i demand and squable over "aloha," yet many of these same indivuals don't give back the aloha that they demand... malama pono, brad RE: Barking Dogs - Carey - 04-02-2007 Beachboy, I agree that if you push any one (any where, not just this state) they will push back... We moved here from a fairly rural area near Chicago, and the people there were much like here, ethnically diverse, oldtimers worried about the new types moving in. When I moved there over 20 years before, I was an outsider for a couple of years, but I was from a community much like it, and knew that I would need to be neighborly, & earn my neighbors respect. The older neighbor with the dogs had had one for a while, when they got the 2nd, and the 2 barked all of the time. Some of the other neighbors had approached this neighbor with demands, and the neighbor resisted. That is why I have tried to stress the fact that you must show concern for the neighbor, and their property/safety when you call. You should never contact a neighbor in a pissed off way, that will just foster a feud. Before you call, take a breath, and really call with a concern for your neighbor. Your neighbor would have a much harder time getting pissed at you if you are calling out of concern. You will probably seem to be slightly daffy neighbor. This was the only thing that worked with the neighbor we had on the mainland. A couple of months of calls out of concern, at odd times, when the dogs had been barking... things like "I heard your dogs barking & looked out & thought I saw a light in your back pasture". "Heard the dogs barking & with the burglary up the street this week..." Those types of calls, not accusing, but start off with the "Heard your dogs barking..." really did work. RE: Barking Dogs - aprild - 04-02-2007 Carey, I love your idea--especially calling the police because you think a burglary is in progress. But what about those people who leave for a vacation, have someone come in to feed the dog and the poor thing barks all night? Any ideas in that case? My elderly mother actually endured this--getting little sleep for months and months. It dragged on for years until the dimwits moved. My neighbor here in Mexico--and I'm not talking acres of land--our lots are about 24' x 60.' They have several. --we're cheek to jowl with them--keeps a horse in a roofless, half-finished house. He is a stallion and someone tied out their mare and colt about a half block away and his neighing woke me up several days in a row. First time for everything I suppose: I'd never been disturbed by a constantly neighing horse. april |
