We have been paying over $400 a month for 2 people for fairly crappy insurance coverage, it is due to go up $200-300 soon, but we do not know by how much yet.
I got the same story from the DOE as you did before we moved here (although one woman at a job fair did give me a more honest assessment of the situation), but then I found the actual experience here in Hawaii to be quite different from the DOE line. Expect to get called for a final interview after school starts and offered some weird mixed line of classes you've never taught before about 3 weeks into the year, that is what happened to most of the new teachers who got jobs last year. If you want to sub there is work, but you have to get a principal to recommend you to take the sub class and then pass it before you can get added to each schools sub list. By then it is 2nd semester and subs don't get benefits. The last round of classes they had people lined up around the block to sign up, and turned away 3 people for every one they gave a seat.

Thanks so much for the info. I don't want to invade your privacy, but we are coming to the Big Island on Jan. 15th, and I was hoping to meet some people to establish contacts in case if we indeed do move there. We are a nice couple with a 17-year old son that is planning to go to University of Hawaii next year to major in Asian Studies (japaneese). I am going to send you an email through the board system.
