FYI....Gas prices in Australia are $6.00 a gallon. A bottle of wine here cost $30.00. And thats the cheap stuff. There are no dollar menu items at McDonalds. There are no $5.00 or $6.00 footlong sandwiches at Subway...they're $10.00. Clothing prices are extreme.....
I'm traveling through Australia and thinking how thankful I am that I live in Hawaii where things are cheaper!

I'm spending my money on ammo and a shovelSmile

No wonder our visitors from Oz come to Honolulu ready to shop 'til they drop.

But it's all relative to how the typical income compares to the cost of living. Hawai'i is difficult because unless you bring money with you or a way to keep earning at mainland rates, the wages here don't match up with the costs.

I am hoping that I can somehow get Kona, Ka'u or Puna Coffee at a reasonable rate once on island. Will I need to grow my own? Charbucks is charging $25 for half a pound of Ka'u Coffee over here.

Kelena, KTA is advertising 7 oz. bags of 100% Royal Kona medium dark roast for $7.99 in their monthly coupon booklet. Same booklet has the same amount of Hawaiian Isles 100% Kona Coffee for $10.99. I'm told that both of those are pretty good prices, but I don't care for Kona coffee that much. Ka'u and Puna are better, IMHO. Kona tastes harsh to me, no matter how I brew it.

That is pretty good! Thank you! I agree with you about Kona coffee, which, I think, has more variation to it. It can be quite good, or harsh. A friend explained ---or perhaps I should say opined--- that Kona coffee is often roasted too dark. It is delicate and so should always be on the light side of a medium roast or the darker side of a light roast. But Seattle trained us to prefer that dark, dark coffee, and so Kona coffee occasionally has the hell roasted out of it.

Puna and Ka'u coffee are both great. I hope they realize they have a local market if they would just go for volume, with a lower price. There is no reason for Hawaii to import coffee.

There are growers that you can buy direct from that are less than 1/2 the mainland price you are paying, in fact most are!

One of the fun things is that most of the farmers markets have a variety of growers to try...as we have found that one persons favorite brew is not the fav of another....heck, you may even plant your own trees for a 'house blend"!

Does anyone grow and sell tea locally? Never liked coffee no matter where it's from but would certainly spend a little money on some black tea grown around here. Of course I'd ruin the brew with milk and sugar but that's just due to my non-conformist anarchic upbringing.

Kelena, there are a number of coffee growers who sell at the Hilo Farmer's Market for about $20/pound. Both KTA and Long's also have good selections for $20-25/pound.
