RE: Big Island Organizations & Programs Losing Funding - HiloJulie - 08-04-2026 What is worse - people on the dole, or the fact that a store (that has employees, pays rent, taxes, insurance, etc.) that has existed all these years nearly went out of business because it temporarily lost the ability to accept EBT for a few weeks? It would be terrible if folks on the dole were not able to get free-range organic chicken at $20/lb, or they/them chia seeds from fair-trade Peruvian shamans, etc. Choices, choices! SNAP is relatively generous in Hawaii, but it only goes so far. BTW, Keaau natural foods has not sold any meat products in the past. Will they change course with new ownership? I kinda doubt it. It would be terrible if folks on the dole were not able to get free-range organic chicken at $20/lb, or they/them chia seeds from fair-trade Peruvian shamans, etc. ********** I'm confused. Should people on SNAP only be able to buy 3/$1 ramen and tinned Vienna sausages? What someone chooses to buy to eat shouldn't matter...their SNAP money is just going to go less far based on their choices. Also, one of the helpful side benefits of SNAP is "Da Bux" program, where certain local produce is half price using EBT. That can really help get fresh local produce into folk's diets. |
