There’s only 180,000 total on the big Island last census

How about we have a special election and all the registered voters can partake, and vote for or against, with the result binding? Settle this once and for all.

There’s only 180,000 total on the big Island...

I did say Islands, plural. But when you consider all the Hawaiians world wide... and of course, you do understand, many haoles agree with the Hawaiians.

On another point... a while back someone asked if there was anything the state could do to salvage the situation. To reach a resolve by which the Hawaiian people embrace the construction of the TMT. It isn't my kuleana, but I'll venture a guess..

Ige offers to begin negotiating a free and autonomous Hawaiian Nation. Complete with a mapped out process defining what lands and on what terms their title is transferred to the Hawaiian Kingdom. With this offer the title to the lands in question immediately be held in escrow and no new development agreements made. Meanwhile the Hawaiian Kingdom agrees to honor all leases currently in place on said lands, and that they be allowed to run their course. As to renewal of those leases, that would be up to the Kingdom and individual lease holders to negotiate.

As such, because the TMT is already approved they would have the right to continue with their construction. But obviously the TMT organization would want to enter into negotiation with the kingdom so as to find how to move forward with their blessing and whether they can live with the long term consequences of such an agreement.

Of course all parties would be giving up something. Though that is the essence of any negotiation, and one can hope that the rewards outweigh the losses for all concerned.

Personally, I think 10 years and months of hearings should have been enough for everyone to have their say.

And yet, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, across the islands think otherwise. Should be interesting to see it all work out. My bet, the state eats crow.

Thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, millions across the US think that Trump should not be President...yet he is. At times opinions and protests cannot change what is.

Yes, but the Hawaiians obviously have what Ms Nancy doesn't.

TMT Corp has had permission to build...twice. If this time doesn't stick nobody in their right mind would stick around for more and no new business partners will come. As bad as the State of Hawaii has been at honoring its contracts the sovereignty activists would be 10 times worse.

I too think that Hawaii will remain a state as long as the US remains a nation but if there were a reinstated Hawaiian Kingdom on its own there would be a gold rush atmosphere as various nations sought to cozy up to the Kingdom to get what they could get. China probably, Russia, and possibly N. Korea would make really strong plays to seal the deal. Like with an abusive spouse, after the honeymoon things would be less fun. Ask Hong Kong, Taiwan, or Tibet what being China's date is like.

"And yet, thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands, across the islands think otherwise."

Where do you get these numbers from? Wishful thinking? Your bogus petition?

I'm not in favor of a referendum but for different reasons than the anti-science crowd, who would almost certainly lose.

Per latest update from HNN, Lt Gov Green says the TMT might have to "move on" if an agreement with its opponents can't be reached.

[i]"One project can't be allowed to disrupt the fabric of our state's ohana," Green told HNN. "So if there can't be a brokered peace that prevents that, then the TMT would have to move on."

What a wonderful precedent: don't waste your time filing permits and paying fees and going to court, because you know, your project might bother some people (for certain values of "some") and that would be disruptive, you'll just have to take your project and move on.
