RE: The Bicker Board - ironyak - 06-09-2025 Obie - I promise to stay away. That was short lived. Obie - "National politics are allowed if the discussion is about the current administration." Nah, PW talked about the last administration's impacts on Hawaii too. Even discussions about another older one if Sherman sets the Wayback Machine properly. There's lots of other examples available (Hey Rocky, watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat) to disabuse you of your misunderstanding, but that would require you to read and care about evidence, which doesn't seem to be the case. Manao - talking about federal impact on a poor single mother's ability to provide for her family in Puna isn't [allowed], because it was an illegal federal executive order that screwed her.. according to the guy in Ohio. ^This. Some of us are here full time, working, raising kids, etc, and can see directly the impacts the arbitrary and illegal actions of the federal government is having on our neighbors and community, here in Hawaii. You don't want to acknowledge, talk, or care about these issues - then don't. Go play with your snake where ever the weather is best and the taxes the lowest. Some of us still have people to look after and things to get sorted, out here in the fragile periphery of a decaying system of governance. RE: The Bicker Board - Obie - 06-09-2025 Here is a gem. How come you've changed ? dakine Offline Posting Freak ***** Posts: 968 Threads: 74 Joined: Aug 2007 #106-30-2016, 04:51 PM In every online forum that I participate in or otherwise just read occasionally the number one rule is “No Personal Attacks.” Why is PW different? Why are personal attacks tolerated here? They are demeaning, rude, childish, and have no place in civil society. They are not welcome in any other form of public gathering, so why do they have a prominent place in the PW discourse? I know the rules we agree to when we registered here say no trolling, but why does it not say No Personal Attacks? Why? And what good is a rule that is unenforced? We have a few participants here that make almost no constructive contribution but post personal attacks practically everyday. We have others that are intelligent enough to actually make a contribution, but still give them no topic to reply to and they go off and personally attack someone, as if they are addicted to posting and if nothing else will attack other members here so as to scratch that itch. Why is this tolerated? ETCorrect typos RE: The Bicker Board - MyManao - 06-09-2025 (06-09-2025, 06:08 PM)Obie Wrote: Here is a gem.. Since you brought it up.. what's your favorite libation Obie? RE: The Bicker Board - Obie - 06-09-2025 Quit drinking in December and have lost 50 lbs. Thanks for asking. Here is my main complaint. We are still talking about ICE and the Kona coffee farmers. Since that original story and it started out as one report that was repeated over and over, There has been no follow-up report. Is ICE still there arresting coffee farmers every day ? Was it just another story that got blown out of proportion ? The girl from Australia? Original report was from the travel section of an Australian newspaper, YouTube and Facebook. She did try to enter the country illegally and you all made a joke of the fact CBP was triggered by her suitcase full of pots and pans. There is a way to do it legally. Here is a hint. https://www.rebeccablacklaw.com/how-to-bring-your-spouse-to-the-usa-legally-as-an-american-citizen/ Here is but one reason why people are stripped searched and asked to squat down. Must have missed this one. https://www.hawaiipolice.gov/1-09-24-update-police-arrest-and-charge-two-inmates-following-overdose-death-at-hccc/ RE: The Bicker Board - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 06-09-2025 Since that original story and it started out as one report that was repeated over and over, There has been no follow-up report. There have been numerous additional stories, although not on the mainly entertainment style networks that only have news in their name. Here’s one from 3 days ago: Donald Trump’s war on immigration has impacted all corners of the U.S., but now, immigration officials have targeted an isolated patch on Hawaii’s Big Island. "Even cats and dogs have rights here and in the United States, and they're being treated better than some of our community members here," Armando Rodriguez, owner of Aloha Star Coffee Farms, told local station KITV. The article goes on to add that while Hawaiian farmers and field workers who are not criminals by any stretch of the imagination have been deported, Mexican cartel members have been brought INTO America by the administration. Hypocrisy much? https://www.aol.com/us-imposes-sanctions-el-chapos-171933799.html https://www.kitv.com/news/kona-coffee-farmers-devastated-by-loss-of-deported-workers/article_addb2aa7-bdd6-44da-8731-b9797768fc67.html RE: The Bicker Board - ironyak - 06-09-2025 I'll add (somewhat pointlessly) that there are more details available if Obie would actually read the linked articles. From the article in the latest post in the ICE thread: "Big Island Now requested the total number of people who had been arrest by ICE during President Trump’s second term in office, with a breakdown of how many people were arrested in Hawaiʻi County and their criminal history. Erin Musso, a public affairs liaison with Homeland Security Investigations in Honolulu, provided a link to ICEʻs arrest and detention statistics. But at this site, there does not appear to be any data available for the state of Hawaiʻi." So much like CBP (what written rule did the Australian lady break again?), ICE is not providing the information about their policies and activities related to Hawaii. Surely that means the "main complaint" is with the federal agencies and their lack of updates and transparency. Right? RE: The Bicker Board - HereOnThePrimalEdge - 06-09-2025 More coffee farm updates: Immigration enforcement is intensifying in Hawaii, with federal authorities making dozens of arrests in May, including at Kona’s coffee farms, which has left communities shaken. “I think there’s a lot of fear within the community,” Jeanne Kapela, a legislator in the Hawaii House of Representatives, told SFGATE. She represents the Hawaii Island district ranging from South Kona to Keaau. “Just having ICE and HSI within our community is nerve wracking, and they’ve brought in a number of agents from the continent and from Honolulu to be a part of these operations.” SFGATE reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for comment on the arrests in May, but the agency deferred to the news release. Kapela said ICE is not around every day but instead come in waves every couple of weeks. “Sometimes, they’ll stand outside of our grocery stores, so I think small things like that have really turned the entire community on edge,” she said. “I started getting really involved when I had the principal of a local school call me, mainly because students weren’t showing up to class.” https://www.sfgate.com/hawaii/article/hawaii-ice-raids-kona-coffee-20353569.php RE: The Bicker Board - Obie - 06-10-2025 "More coffee farm updates:' Just a different twist on the same reports except for this part. "Tricia McLaughlin, the assistant secretary of public affairs for the Department of Homeland Security, said in a news release that the department is “conducting operations in Hawaii to protect communities from violent criminals who shouldn’t be in our country,” adding that “the targets of the operation in Hawaii include criminal illegal aliens charged with kidnapping, assault, distribution of deadly drugs, domestic abuse, and theft.” Do we need more criminals in Hawaii ?. Our jails are always overfull. RE: The Bicker Board - Obie - 06-10-2025 Have you ever witnessed an ICE raid 1st hand? I have, I was out for dinner at a Mexican Restaurant in 1993. Noticed a bunch of law enforcement vehicles pulling into the parking lot ICE and various others poured out of the vehicles, some rushed thru the front doors and the rest headed to a rear entrance. They ignored everyone in the restaurant including the people who looked Hispanic. Including my part Hispanic wife. They took about 1/2 dozen people in handcuffs from the kitchen and were done. We received our food after about 10 minutes and everything had returned to normal. My wife and I were searched by CBP at the Canada/ Montana border back in the 1980s too but that's not in Puna so I'll just say it happened because of a misunderstanding. It wasn't pleasant but we survived. RE: The Bicker Board - Durian Fiend - 06-10-2025 (06-10-2025, 09:20 AM)Obie Wrote: "More coffee farm updates:' Key word is bolded. Would be nice to know the criminal history, if any, of those arrested. Quotes below are from a story about how the arrests are affecting Big Island coffee farmers. "..Bruce Cornwell, 72, who grows and processes his coffee and that of other farmers for the U.S. and international markets, said: “These are good, hard workers. They aren’t gang members.” Unlike industrial farms, small-scale coffee growers cannot readily make use of the government’s seasonal agricultural visa program, which is complex, costly and requires extensive paperwork. Mr. Cornwell said that workers should be offered pathways to immigrate legally, rather than be rounded up... ..Mr. Rodriguez is worried about the harvest, he said. Workers who he normally hires for the season have informed him and other growers that they will not return from the mainland United States, even though they are green card holders. “They’re afraid that they’ll be detained at the airport, or their green card is going to be taken away,” Mr. Rodriguez said as he drove along the Mamalahoa Highway, a narrow, winding coastal road with turnoffs on either side that lead to dozens of coffee farms... ...On a recent morning, workers moved along a row of baby coffee plants on the three-acre farm of Don Davis, a retired Navy pilot who flew for Delta Air Lines.
...On a recent morning, workers moved along a row of baby coffee plants on the three-acre farm of Don Davis, a retired Navy pilot who flew for Delta Air Lines. The workers are on their feet for 11 hours a day, said Mr. Davis, who pays them $30 an hour. He had just hung a “no trespassing” sign on his gate in the hope of deterring ICE agents from entering his property. He said that he worried for his workers, even though they had legal status.“There is nobody else who is going to pick this,” Mr. Davis said of his crop..." So who among us will prove Mr. Davis wrong? Not me... https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/14/us/hawaii-kona-coffee-workers-immigrants-ice.html |
