First, there is a difference between people who are simply uncomfortable in their living situation, and people who are uncomfortable because others intentionally or unintentionally say things to make them uncomfortable.
Second, there is a saying "putting down roots." Just as you can't cut a tree at ground level, ship it somewhere else, then expect it to grow, people can't just "pull up roots." It's not that simple.
And most of the island residence have a place they came from and can move back to. For the Hawaiians this is it.
I would say for most island residents as well as Hawaiians, "this is it." If you don't think so, ask someone who has lived here for 20 or 30 or more years what it is they have to go back to. You might be surprised at the answer.

Dakine says people of a different skin color should "shut up and go back to wherever they came from".

I pointed out the hypocrisy in a Civil Beat article written by an anti-telescope person so Dakine
speculates about my mental state, instead of attempting to refute my assertions.

Mr. PaulW, it is my intention to give weight to all opinions, including yours, and others in this thread. Dakine may not utilize the language you expect, however, my choice of words ("candor") applies to your statements also. Being candid is good, no matter your position. In trying to maintain balance, as rainyjim reminds me (which is true) it is "semantics", Sir. With due respect.

As of this day, the entities involved are apparently still in discussion. It is of great importance that TMT and the protestors/protectors continue dialog. Any progress is good.
JMO.
ETA: (Because I forgot initially) Dakine, Mr. PaulW may have ancestors who are from here, akin to my forefathers who are not of Hawaiian blood (no more "koko")but are "Hawaiian Nationals". Thus, he is "home", if this is the case. Just saying, for clarity.

I agree that only Hawaiians should decide on Hawaii-only issues, just like Californians and Texans should.

You mean the way California emissions requirements drive the rest of the US? Or maybe you meant the way Texas influences school textbooks for the rest of the US?
The lines between states exist mostly on maps, not so much in real life.

I personally believe that the Western mind is a very aggressive ... the theft of land, the imposing of ideas, and denying others of the cultural ways has been very effective in conquering many less aggressive cultures, of which the Hawaiians have been a part.
King Kamehameha unified the islands, but the descendents of chiefs on Maui, Oahu, and Kauai never use the term "unified." They had customs unique to their individual islands and cultures until King Kamehameha conquered them. Would you say that King Kamehameha had a Western mind?
