before the eruption of the pu u o , January 3, 2014 marked the 31st anniversary of the Pu`u `O`o eruption on the east rift zone of Kilauea Volcano.
Before that , in general old timers say that the air was pristine, and likely was because we are indeed living in a quite distant from land place . With the caveat that there were days that weren't as good
due to volcanic activity, so I supose it did depend on which way the wind was blowing and where you were living
