Thanks Terra, I just s[pit my coffee all over my keyboard ! hahahaha

So, that leads to the question, where are the good farmers markets with pleasant people and fruits and veggies reasonably priced ?

It's all relative I guess once you are at a place long enough you get exposed to the inside drama.

I really enjoyed interacting with the people and wild assortment of fruits and veggies at the Hilo Farmers Market,last time I was there, but some guy working a table there told me to go to Makuu because that is where you get to see what Puna is all about. I don't know exactly what he meant by that, but at the time it sounded good to me.

I only go where I can park easily. I went by Makuu yesterday with the intent to go in, but the line of cars was already formed, and I just kept on driving...

Kalakoa ponders;

"I thought Planning used the Makuu market as a "cautionary tale" -- it's the only market that doesn't have to abide by the Special Use Permit process -- which has (coincidentally, of course) been used to shut down all the "private subdivision" markets."

It was at a Planning Commission hearing concerning the HOVE Ranchos Market. Folks were parking on the street, vending on the street, and People had to cross a street to access the Market. The Ranchos BOD had filed a complaint against the people running the market.

Maya (County Planner), in her presentation, displayed an aerial photo of the Maku'u market showing multiple parking areas, traffic flow patterns, and numerous staff. The Maku'u Farmers demonstrated how it should be done.

I don't see where this demonstrates bias. Being on Hawaiian Homelands, they could do it differently, but choose to make it safer and as efficient as they can. Remember; it's visited by a few thousand people a day, and the task is daunting.

I went yesterday; there was a line going in, but not out to the highway. It took me 5 minutes to park and enter. Sadly, my wife wouldn't let me buy the nice accordion that Mark had on sale for $100.

We went yesterday. The "lines" of cars did not exist when we arrived, about 9:00. The collection both is safely inside the property. I whined about the $1,00 on an earlier post but have changed my mind. Call me a flip-flopper but $1.00 is very little. MFM, we have observed, is clearly well-managed, continually improving, especially the parking. I appreciate this wonderful place and will happily pay a great big dollar. For those who can't afford it, you can always shop at Malama Market.

Pay and play or go away!

I don't mind paying a buck to park. What I do mind is the fact that their parking lot is so disorganized, causing a continual game of "chicken" at the ends of each lane). Cars should be parked in a way that encourages an orderly flow of traffic - with all lanes being one-way. If cars were diagonally parked in alternate directions by lane (the first lane pointing towards Hilo, the second towards Pahoa, the third towards Hilo, etc.), then customers could easily snake through the lot until they found a space. This flow would also facilitate directing traffic to exit out the back way, easing congestion at the other exit.

The "disorganized" parking lot is a side effect of the original problem: MFA is exempt from the requirements that would otherwise govern the design of their parking lot, etc.

Either way, I've long since learned that you either stock up or second-source anything you really need -- your favorite (anything) could be gone tomorrow.

This will be the last Sunday for free parking at Maku'u Farmers market. Some of the vendors I know say they are worried people will not come to the market anymore, I hope people will still come,have fun and buy local.
