Great question snorkel, This may be a very good extra credit assignment for the future generation?. Maybe the redemption price should be doubled or even tripled to 10 or 15 cents, bins should be kept under ground like gas, but with retractable covers and of course chain, lock or code. Maybe the stores or businesses themselves that sell the products should be taxed or charged similarly before selling it on an island. The 5 or 10 cents charged to the business selling such products like bottled water or soda and beer could go directly into a fund for parks or schools, ect. The tax or price to do business in the islands, plus this may encourage less of these products to be sold within the island chain? or folks could figure out different ways to get their products packaged, shelved, and sold better environmentally and community friendly?. P.S. At least try to make recycling incentives for more than the homeless that beat business services to the job. It cost me more to recycle than it does to throw it away, as it also cost more to purchase than return in the first place.( time= money+gas+rodents=frustration or death if you are recycling at the Keaau dump and recycling center, lots of accidents).

Gypsy 69 I agree with you
We are running around recycling like crazy,
And the big companies are generating so much waste .
I literally get sick to my stomach, when I see all the stuff thrown out.
Every seen a 2 man plastic kayak carved up with a saw.
Fills the entire dumpster.
I am off island for a week, but hoping to get people behind an effort to curb the
Stuff being dumped in the trash.

Nani, a good place to begin to get involved is Zero Waste Hawaii: http://www.hawaiizerowaste.org/

Having lived through this once before, unless there is a proactive community group BEFORE the dumps close, the first response for paying for anything is to take it to the property owners... our county taxes had almost $1k just for waste disposal facilities, this was in ADDITION to the charges for waste pickup ~20/mo & the $3 per bag charges.... amazing how quickly those charges came to be ...right AFTER the dumps closed....

So, be proactive on this, or wait until the 2 dumps close...really, it is a choice each of us must consider...because the dumps WILL be closed... the only unknown is just how long do we want to allow them to remain open to take our waste.

ADD: big & small companies DO change...but the main drivers for them are public demand &/or economics.... so unless there is an organized group demanding change PRIOR to the cost going up, there is absolutely no incentive for them to change....

Our old county had all of the big boxes & more than are here on this island, each of them figured out how to really trim down their waste after the dumps closed... and to be fair, there are some big boxes here that do things like send their non-resale items to places like Goodwill & Sally shop... but our last county, even the construction companies had to hire waste reduction personnel at construction sites (part of the permit!)

This was not some exotic location, but was in the middle of the heartland, with soils that either had extremely high permeability or fractured aquatards & high priced land for a new dump....something that is very similar to this county!

By recycling and using a compost bin for food scraps ,eliminates smell, and have my own green waste composting spot so there's no need to make frequent trips to the transfer station. Saves time and fuel.

Slow the flow:

1. Tipping fees for everyone.

2. Huge fines for illegal dumping.

Problem is, nobody really wants to be inconvenienced by change -- easier to do nothing and just raise taxes later ("free money").

On the other hand ... the Japanese have developed automated garbage processing facilities that separate all reusable materials and compost, leaving very little that cannot be recycled one way or the other. Expensive, and about the size of a city block, but it works...

Bicycle rims and chains, oh my! Do you know how many wind generators that could be made out of those parts alone with other re purpose items? Think rim on its side, gallon paint cans cut down the middle to make a scoop, screw them to the bike rim...

What should be done, is take a large truck down to south point load it up with the garbage that washes up out there and go dump it on the corporations front doorstep and just keep doing it relentlessly .

RE: Recycle WHY??. or why not? - spunky - 05-06-2014

@Gypsy

You don't WANT to recycle because you see other people not recycling????

Maybe you lived in the 1960s and were for segregation because it used to be legal?

OR maybe your homophobic because you see large organizations like some churches also being homophobic???

Your rationalizations are beyond idiotic. By your logic we should still be living by kerosene lamps because no one should bother inventing electric light because it's always been dark out.

Back in college I was part of a group that got one of the largest universities in the country to implement a recycling program. Between staff and students, more than double the entire population of Hilo and surrounding towns was on campus at any given time. The University's list of objections was long. The obstacles were large. And yet it was done. Slowly at first. But now it is second nature. I'm also seeing recycling bond in airports and other places not normally found.

But by your own words we shouldn't even bother because some large companies don't bother. What a self righteous, selfish, lazy whiner.
PS - my mom once collected the hi-five returnables at her workplace. In less than a year it paid for a trip for her and my grandmother to fly out to visit me. She's since gotten more coworkers invoked and they donate the proceeds of their recycling (totaling more than $700 annually) to local charities.

Hey Skunky, Thank you. Your college edumacation and mother brought up some great solutions to my inconveniences on your last post. So way back when you were in college you yourself could get things done, now your all grown up so you don't care large business do not recycle as they should on an island. Your mother does sound like a hero, and because she did not post your insults I will give her a pass. The recycling program here in the state has come a long way, more can be recycled and these centers don't have to be so far apart. THE County and State helped Pahoa get a new police station, fire station, burger king, Kfc, quik loans, ect, YET the recycling center was built from the geothermal relocation fund. Now that the state is doing better with its $$800,000,000 million surplus, maybe they could pay back this relocation fund with a bump?. I do have a question regarding the charge and redemption of these products like beer and soda, does folks on E.B.T. see or get charged the same way as others?. Since they have imposed this tax or charge I myself have tried not to buy or purchase as much sodas or water. I use to drink beer, now I have been sober for 8 years, my point being I have tried to buy less of these bottles and cans since the 6 cent charge. Yet majority of folks I see at Malama buy these products like they are going out of style(soda and beer), most in Puna seem to have this credit card and no reasons to buy less of these products.
This area (Puna) has a very high E.B.T rate, as well poor health, poor education, with very few opportunities for our keiki's in schools. Recycling in Puna could be a bit different with some of the proceeds going towards our local schools to teach classes on how to recycle in our future?. Wood shop, FFA, computer, Welding, auto, and recycling classes would all be good classes that should be offered here in Puna. My first few days of not recycling have been pleasant with less hassles. My boys would like to recycle to help save money for the dentist so this boycott may not last long, $5,400 for braces is a lot of bottles and cans. P.S. How are the plastic and gas companies doing as a whole? Puna is awfully dependent on both, we need alternatives for the future?.

RE: Recycle WHY??. or why not? - Tink - 05-07-2014

Back to the recycle thing...too bad HELCO doesn't use garbage as fuel at Southpoint, and use garbage instead of black oil at Kalaeloa cogeneration plants. Use heat runoff to run scrubbers on the exhaust stacks. Can't be any worse than the VOG, and definitely less than black oil out of the stack. I believe the steam (geothermal) HELCO uses is "owned" by the State, and therefore HELCO is billed by the State? Bi fuel is even better. Use steam to run a turbo that is used in the incineration of waste to create energy. Lowers steam fee, cleaner burn on garbage fire with turbo assist to create energy. Oh well, dreaming again...
