Obviously it's a judgement call based on perception, shockwave rider. Naturally some things will appear obvious, other times less so. People sometimes ignore things brought into a forum, other times not. Its the nature of participating in a forum.

They even prepared and ate haggis.

It is unlikely this haggis was authentic unless they were butchering their own sheep, as USDA regulations preclude the use of a sheep stomach for food.

implying that having a sense of identity about your heritage is the same thing as racism

What about claiming identity with your cultural heritage, then failing to live up to it?

This is why I've never understood Christianity: "God is love, but only our God, and only if you sing from this book, and also you can't be gay, God hates that."

Yes, finding the line between healthy identity and imposing fixation. An age-old dilemma.

FYI: they were sheep farmers, so maybe next time you could refrain from implying that I am making stuff up and just ask. Plus, lots and lots of people do things the FDA doesn't like, including selling unpasteurized milk.

Wow!! such judgmental people. As if it is your right to judge wether an individual lives up to their personal heritage. Most of the people who are even equating this to race can barely comprehend how racist they sound right now and what race even means...or what racism even means for that matter. If you look at what racism is you would see it is not even possible for native americans or hawaiians to even be racist. As a population they are not even in the position to be racist.

I implied no such thing, merely that the haggis would not be truly authentic; enlightened people would hear a "wooshing sound" when considering the ironies involved.

" If you look at what racism is you would see it is not even possible for native americans or hawaiians to even be racist. "

Oh, please. What a ridiculous statement.

RE: The Great Spirit - kalakoa - 09-15-2015

No, that's completely correct: it's only "racism" when White People do it.

If it is made by kilt wearing sheep farmers, using a recipe brought over by their ancestors, it is authentic.

Racism is a system of oppression against a minority population and based upon skin color. A population is either oppressed or the oppressor. The indigenous population was decimated in Hawaii and on the mainland. We are talking about the some of the most decimated populations in this country. In order to be able to oppress another population there must be a certain type of power dynamic going on. Thus there is a system that keeps a population that has the presumed power in power. Racism is not about calling each other names. Racism is a system that keeps a certain power structure in place.
