The tests are now going to be done in state.

"Since the outbreak was first reported by state health officials Oct. 27, blood tests were sent to the mainland to verify presence of the dengue virus, with final confirmation taking about a week. However, a new state lab is expected to cut that wait to one day, officials say."

I think the biggest problem is going to be getting people to use insect repellent ! With so many opposed to vaccinations and immunizations it's going to be hard to get everyone to use a repellent with Deet.

All you have to do is google "Deet" and you can read all the conspiracy theories about Deet.

I have been using concentrated Deet for years with no ill effects but then I use roundup too.I bought a spray bottle of Deep Woods Off Sportsman at Ace in Pahoa on Sunday. It is 98% Deet and you use very little.

DEET for the skin and this product for your clothes. Why merely repel the bloodsuckers when there is a magic spray for your clothes that kills them?

www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001ANQVYU/

For use on clothing, tents, and other gear, Sawyer Premium Permethrin Clothing Insect Repellent not only repels insects, it actually kill ticks, mosquitoes, chiggers, mites, and more than 55 other kinds of insects on contact. Permethrin is odorless after drying and will not stain or damage clothing, fabrics, plastics, finished surfaces, or any of your outdoor gear. Use it while hunting for an odorless way to protect yourself from common bugs.

The active ingredient Permethrin is a synthetic molecule similar to pyrethrum which is taken from the Chrysanthemum flower. Sawyer Premium Permethrin comes in two sizes -- a 12-ounce trigger spray bottle (for treating up to 2 complete outfits) and a 24-ounce trigger spray bottle (for treating up to 4 complete outfits). A single application lasts up to six washings or up to 40 days of sun exposure. Repellent should be applied outdoors and before clothing is worn; after it’s treated, hang clothing and let dry 2 hours (4 hours in humid conditions).

That this is even an issue clearly demonstrates State's failure to respond.

"It's on you."

They managed to hand out mosquito repellent during the 2001 outbreak on Maui, which suggest that they do understand "mitigation effort"...

They managed to hand out mosquito repellent during the 2001 outbreak on Maui,

Oprah owns a home on Maui.
State officials don't want people to turn on their TVs only to have Oprah tell her audience how she could hardly walk to the stage because she contracted dengue on Maui.

terracore,

Sounds like a great product with good reviews, would be perfect for working outdoors.
Also possibility Garden Exchange, Farm Supply Cooperative or Home Depot could bring a shipment to Hilo, if enough customers order/request the product?

Carpenter ant and termite killer also wipes out mosquitos. Unfortunately other little critters you may not want to hurt go down in the process. We have severe mosquito issues on the Texas Gulf Coast and I wish these "beeches" would just die and stay gone. I am coming over in January with a body full of mosquito bites. I don't suppose that helps against Dengue?
