"As for Papayas?"...

The places that buy papayas from growers sell the rejects for $10 per "tote". A "tote" is one of those big plastic bins I'm sure you've seen on the back of flatbed trucks. A $10 "tote" of papaya weighs about 800 pounds.

Most of the papayas sold at farmers markets are from one of those reject bins. And by "reject" I don't mean that they are unsafe to eat, they just weren't the size or color the Asian markets demand. The Asian-market papayas are beautiful: Large and bruise/blemish free. Export papayas also need to be treated for fly strike and they use the rejects to calibrate their steam machines that kill the fruit fly larvae (another word for fruit fly larvae is maggots).

When the papaya harvest is down, and it is currently down because of weather, there are less rejects available. Less rejects=less $10 for 800 pound papayas on the "farmers market" market.

When the weather cooperates the 6 for $1.00 papayas will be back. The ones that didn't make it that far were sorted out and fed to livestock.

RE: COSTCO in Hilo - Lee M-S - 05-24-2016

I finally went over the dark side and joined Costco to get new tires for my car. Dear god, they're awful to deal with.

They sent an email that they'd mailed the card. When it hadn't arrived in 2 weeks, I called. SEVEN voice mail menus later, I got a live person who wouldn't listen to my question until she had my phone number, name (spelled), and account number. I even suggested we do account number first, since shouldn't the other info fill in? but no, had to do it her way.

I finally get to tell her I'm trying to find out where my card is, and she says she's the wrong person to deal with. At least she put me through to customer service, where they told me they don't ship the cards, you pick them up. When I pointed out that the email should have said that, instead of saying the card was mailed, he said "oh, yeah, we're trying to fix that." My phone said this call lasted 12 minutes, to find out something that should have been in the email to begin with.

Then it took SIX more phone calls to make the appointment to get the tires installed--they simply don't pick up the phone, just let it ring. Once I finally got through, the guy was nice and I got the appointment I wanted.

I have not set foot inside a costco in 10 years, and I already hate them.

So what's in their food court? Their website doesn't say, and I'm guessing it's not the same as mainland costcos.

I get the exact same treatment at Firestone, no membership dues required.

RE: COSTCO in Hilo - Hawaii Bound - 05-24-2016

Food court is the same as the mainland and has the same prices. I have never made an appointment for my tires I just showed up. Only took about an hour and half. Guess I was lucky. I will try an appointment next time.

RE: COSTCO in Hilo - KeaauRich - 05-24-2016

Food court id slightly different than the mainland...There they have Italian Sausage sandwiches, here it's Portuguese sausage. There may be other slight differences, but I only get the $1.50 hot dog with soda (free refills too...) -- one of the best bargains on the island. I've heard their pizza is good and cheap too, but haven't tried that.

RE: COSTCO in Hilo - ericlp - 05-24-2016

Yes the combo pizza is one of the better deals and pretty good. It will feed 5-6 people for 10 bucks or whatever it is going for...

The next deal is the 5 dollar Rotisserie Chicken deal... I like to eat raisins with my breakfast. You won't find 4.5lbs box of them for 8 bucks or so on hilo side. Plus walnuts 3 lbs for 17 bucks. Excellent quality, second best is target for 9.xx lbs.

These prices where from 3 months ago and from memory, we don't go that often, but when we do we get these items along with other bulk stuff that will save a few bucks over the long run. At least we have a costco on the island. I can say that I wouldn't visit kona's beaches that much since we go to the beach and then costco on the way home. So, kinda works out good for us, a little mini vacation that normally wouldn't happen.

They sent an email that they'd mailed the card.

You could have just went there, paid for the card and got it on the spot.

RE: COSTCO in Hilo - Lee M-S - 05-24-2016

I bought the membership at the same time as I ordered the tires online. The tires aren't kept in stock, so you have to order in advance. Can't order without membership. This way, I make one trip for the tires.
