Think twice - Carey - 11-13-2018 If you do not want to do the new lava hike, as of Saturday, the road was not open to vehicles, so made a nice bike path... 2 + lane wide very well packed gravel (& paved in the kipukas) & each time we go, the trail has gotten easier... There is some heat, but not as much as the 4 corners hike & nothing that would stop anyone from the hike There is very sharp lava off of the hike trail, but they have even made hike breaks from the trail over to the new road...so not horrendous if you wanna try the lava hike, but want a nice smooth surface to "fall back on" RE: Hiking to Pohoiki? Think twice - dan d - 11-16-2018 Thanks for the update Carey. Sounds doable. Have u heard anything new about the pool bids? Aloha HPP RE: Hiking to Pohoiki? Think twice - Amrita - 11-17-2018 Confused. Are there restrictions or is one allowed to hike this road. What is the distance from the barricade on the red road? RE: Hiking to Pohoiki? Think twice - Carey - 11-18-2018 There were restrictions with police presence & ticketing this weekend, as there was a blessing around ohana house... The road is not officially open, so those of us that have used it this last week that is has been finished are using a closed road... the hike over the lava probably also crosses non-public areas... so there is that... Good new, the officers at the barricade, enforcing the closed status of the road on the way in, at the barricade, stated that the road would be opening to the public in 2 weeks... The new gravel portion is wider that the old paved red road segments in the kipukas (2 lanes with 1/2 lane on the makai side), but the gravel road has developed some cracks in the week... |
