RE: Upgrade? - HiloJulie - 03-25-2026 Can we legislate scam prevention and protection from womb to tomb? ...but was now on three different recurring donations to PACs for this candidate, who can't even be a candidate any more, for ridiculous amounts. I guess I expect third world scammers trying to get theirs, but billionaires tricking grandmas out of their social security money over and over is a whole new level. Definitely help your kupuna with their budgeting and make sure leeches aren't bleeding them dry. Well, I am more of a womb to tomb education versus legislative regulations gal myself, but having said that, could we do a little combination of both? For example, helping the kupuna with community outreach programs to understand how to recognize a scam which, might have to be reoccurring as memory for some does fade as one ages, to educating our youth as to what a check book, bank, debit card and credit card is and does. Now, on the other hand, a good easy regulation could be as randomq describes the issue they found helping their kupuna friend and the reoccurring PAC or other similar type of discretionary contributions made via an EFT/ACH automatic bank transfer could be a regulation that only allows a 2 times at the monthly trough and then must be legally re approved by the donor and not just an allowable suck at the old lady money teat forever type of law? As for the regulation of big tech, how does the technology get born that goes from the old Ma Bell telephone over copper wires to today's VOIP with caller ID being able to be "scammed" that would allow someone like say me, a retired pre catheter needing boomer to obtain the equipment, software, technology as well as the knowledge to perpetrate a scam that allows me to call you and spoofs your caller ID into me being the Hawaii County Police calling you? We're coming to arrest your ass unless you pay me now! Remember back in the Ma Bell days, when if you somehow managed to get an actual Ma Bell telephone, most likely stealing it and brought it home and hooked it up on your home telephone, the phone company could actually tell you have a phone you are not paying for by how much voltage the ringer drew by the phone company by just simply calling you? At any event, as long as humans are just pure greedy bastards, I guess we will never stop the scammer from scamming! I guess I can be considered a scammer myself, as I did scam my grandson for 4 or 5 years that cutting about an acre and a half of grass using a combination of a riding lawn mower, regular lawn mower and weed whacker was the coolest and neatest thing a young boy could do. But then the little guy got educated. And kept reminding me of child labor regulations and laws or some other nonsense like that! ...and no need for carbon to be expended on making any merch or physical embodiments of their work and shipping them halfway round the world. So today's tech is not all bad, just have to deliberately utilize it in pro-social and mutually supportive ways... Except, you more or less traded one form of carbon expending for a different form of carbon expending, albeit a lower carbon expending activity, similar to comparing the total carbon emissions that a fossil fueled vehicle creates versus the total carbon emissions an EV only or EV/Hybrid vehicle creates. Just be honest about it. You watched the videos, right? About the open house in Aiea with the youngins trying to help inform the kupuna? (This strange insistence on having a strong opinion while being woefully uninformed even when directly provided information is a baffling behavior...) Yes, I watched the video about an open house in Aiea from last September that if I give it the low side, was attending by and presented by 98% boomers. Not too many "youngins" in sight at all. But I don't see how that video helps the average Puna resident much, but hey, you were able to give this boomer a good zing right? Ok, now off to soak the dentures and get my varicose vein stockings on! And just remember with all this insulting boomer talk, at one time in your life, or maybe a lot of times, a boomer wiped your ass. Maybe there could be a little "payback" from you in the way of some helping education for them doing that for you, before you have to eventually do it yourself to and for a boomer!?! Just saying. Something to consider maybe? RE: Upgrade? - MyManao - 03-25-2026 Oh my.. from upgrades.. to somewhere way off the farm.. When one, by the title of this thread, would think it had at least something to do with getting the forum back on track.. suggestions on debugging, updates from the admins, and all that. Maybe just a little? But no, Chrissy don't know zip about all that.. so away we go.. RE: Upgrade? - HiloJulie - 03-25-2026 This strange insistence on having a strong opinion while being woefully uninformed even when directly provided information is a baffling behavior...) As for algorithms, maybe use an app without them where you pick your own channels instead of being force fed content (e.g. Pipe Pipe on Android) Speaking of one having a "strange insistence on having a strong opinion while being woefully uninformed even when directly provided information is a baffling behavior" I'll make a deal with you. You go gather 100 Puna kupuna boomers, all 63 years old and over and ask them what do they think "Pipe Pipe on Android" is and what it does. How much do you want to bet you won't get one correct answer? Now maybe, you could host several community outreach programs and teach those kupuna boomers a thing or two? Like the overwhelming number of times I have suggested doing that? Literally, why not start a thread of your own if that's what you're interested in? RE: Upgrade? - ironyak - 03-25-2026 HiloJulie - As for the regulation of big tech, how does the technology get born that goes from the old Ma Bell telephone over copper wires to today's VOIP with caller ID being able to be "scammed" that would allow someone like say me, a retired pre catheter needing boomer to obtain the equipment, software, technology as well as the knowledge to perpetrate a scam that allows me to call you and spoofs your caller ID into me being the Hawaii County Police calling you? We're coming to arrest your ass unless you pay me now! This should help explain Remember back in the Ma Bell days, when if you somehow managed to get an actual Ma Bell telephone, most likely stealing it and brought it home and hooked it up on your home telephone, the phone company could actually tell you have a phone you are not paying for by how much voltage the ringer drew by the phone company by just simply calling you? And some people realized you could get free calls from using a toy whistle from a box of Captain Crunch that emitted a 2600 Hz tone which was the same frequency that the phone company used. Spoofing a phone number (via a "orange box") is an extension of this original "blue box" phone phreaking. Humans are endlessly inventive, just helps to provide a well-developed moral framework to guide their efforts - maybe some ideas like kuleana, pono, and aloha? Except, you more or less traded one form of carbon expending for a different form of carbon expending, albeit a lower carbon expending activity, similar to comparing the total carbon emissions that a fossil fueled vehicle creates versus the total carbon emissions an EV only or EV/Hybrid vehicle creates. Just be honest about it. Correct - reducing carbon emissions in one's activities is what everyone has been going on about for several decades now. What are you on about? Yes, I watched the video about an open house in Aiea from last September that if I give it the low side, was attending by and presented by 98% boomers. Not too many "youngins" in sight at all. But I don't see how that video helps the average Puna resident much, but hey, you were able to give this boomer a good zing right? Something to consider maybe? The youngins are the ones on stage doing the education you keep demanding of us ya silly nincompoop - based on the CVs I place them as elder Millenial /GenXers. As for what I'm doing, I, like randomq it sounds like, help the boomers in my circle navigate this tech space and the general online morass of the modern bureaucratic state. I'll even help you with yet another resource below you can share during your Boomers for Boomers seminars, because as you said, y'all need a "80-year-old to be the "Media Engagement and Digital Campaigns Manager" instead of a young studly looking Cameron" like me :) MyManao - When one, by the title of this thread, would think it had at least something to do with getting the forum back on track.. suggestions on debugging, updates from the admins, and all that. FWIW, I've sent in my ideas and offers to help, both on front and back channels, so I think we're just on island time now. But then, of course, we have regular Puna folk recommending "Swatting" a potential squatter, so I guess it is a common thing to do, even here in Puna. Silly me, here I thought you were just mostly condemning the kupuna as dumb, catheter needing old farts who deserve to be ripped off because they refuse to take personal responsibility, and posting numerous links and videos, mostly a year plus old and having nothing to do with Puna, helping our kupuna and YOUR involvement while at the same time, referring to my comments of helping various elderly neighbors here in the Acres as "made up stories." Good for you however! As for you being studly, I'd say you would have better luck at being a spokesman for Viagra versus being a Media Engagement and Digital Campaigns Manager. It is always so effective. As for the title of this thread, I'd say the dialog has been spot on, even if, it was plastered full of childish and immature obnoxious blinking and irritating flashing colors and GIF's ala the mentality of kicking an injured old boomer kupuna friend when he is down on his luck after potentially being a victim of a webmaster who may not know what he/she is doing. RE: Upgrade? And other Hi-Tech Scams - randomq - 03-25-2026 ironyak, I grew up on Atari ST, which eventually with a modem became my gateway to many (unauthorized) global computer networks, and ultimately to learning UNIX. Played "NetHack", which is still an engrossing offline game you can play to this day. Also massive multiplayer text games back in the 90's called MUDs or MUSHes. But when I got to college my eyes were opened to PC gaming. We used to show up at our university's computing center with pockets full of DOOM floppies and spend entire weekends in there. Warcraft 1, 2, and 3, Starcraft, Counter-Strike when it was just a buggy Half-Life Mod, Worms World Party... I didn't own Scorched Earth, but remember playing it in someone's dorm room way back! I barely play anymore, but one game I still revisit occasionally is FTL. Space battle rogue-like (you die, you start over) and highly recommended, runs on any old potato, and completely offline. RE: Upgrade? And other Hi-Tech Scams - ironyak - 03-25-2026 Why would the people and companies who invented and are behind the technology allow it to be so easily spoofed then? But then, of course, we have regular Puna folk recommending "Swatting" a potential squatter, so I guess it is a common thing to do, even here in Puna. Because cybersecurity costs the company money, and the scams don't. Welcome to capitalism. Yes, I know, ripping off "the establishment" back then was so vouge. I am sure suggesting that using the "swatting" (see above) technique was made by a person full of "kuleana, pono, and aloha" right? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZuxPKUVGiw Laws != morality I'm on about something like someone who would say this. Or this. At any event, keep your well-tuned specialty of talking out of both sides of your mouth intact as you are very well versed in doing that. Right, using solar for generating electricity removes more carbon emissions than using liquefied natural gas, especially in Hawai'i which has ample solar resources, and no local LNG resources. What's your confusion? Oh, so YOU do help the Kupuna? Silly me, here I thought you were just mostly condemning the kupuna as dumb, catheter needing old farts who deserve to be ripped off because they refuse to take personal responsibility, and posting numerous links and videos, mostly a year plus old and having nothing to do with Puna, helping our kupuna and YOUR involvement while at the same time, referring to my comments of helping various elderly neighbors here in the Acres as "made up stories." The "how to avoid a scam" information is both timeless and relevant to Puna - helps to actually read and watch it. Leilanidude is the one that accused "you invented old people that you help out?" You ok? Good for you however! As for you being studly, I'd say you would have better luck at being a spokesman for Viagra versus being a Media Engagement and Digital Campaigns Manager. Take the blue pill? Yes, it would be nice to get some more up to date updates, but as I said earlier, I'd say at this point, Rob should pull out the famous Gen X method of demanding to speak to his webmaster's manager. It is always so effective. Think the Karen thing is actually a younger boomer thing, but maybe some older genXers - everyone is on the spectrum after all. But Rob is too cool for that - having discovered Haight-Ashbury in '65 and seen Hendrix's "last" show at the Isle of Wight, he'll probably stay groovy no matter. Um, you posting while "happy, sad, ill, angry, hungry, drunk, stoned or simultaneously watching Sponge Bob."? randomq - I grew up on Atari ST... Wow, that Atari ST is new to me (or maybe just forgotten as the neural network fails), but thanks for the missed bit of computing history (check out this online emulator)! My gateway was making the turtle goto on the Apple II's at school and BASIC on the Commodore 64 at home, which used regular cassette tapes for storage (could even play the code back as "music" - take that Brian Eno!) Later friends had an Amiga and Compuserve/Prodigy, but modems and networking had to wait till I had DOS on a 486dx at home. Yep on the MUDs, MUSHes, and MOOs - still drop into LCS from time to time as its content has aged well IMHO. Had forgotten about "Worms World Party", that was a thing for a bit, we also took over the basement computer labs on weekends to play Starcraft and Rainbow Six:Rogue Spear, both coop and versus, for days at a time, only taking breaks to run across the street for pizza or Chinese food (also got an education in there somewhere I swear :) As for Scorched Earth, I might even have a disk floating around as I kept some tech bits and bobs back to the 5 1/4" actually floppies and 386 motherboards - let me know if I should make you a copy! ;) Yes also on FTL and their other title Into the Breach - good pixel-graphic puzzle games for any Punatic looking to exercise the old grey matter. RE: Upgrade? And other Hi-Tech Scams - HiloJulie - 03-25-2026 Yak Yak Yak: Because cybersecurity costs the company money, and the scams don't. Welcome to capitalism. Maybe hold the companies, their officers, directors and shareholders who allow their products to be hacked, and used for nefarious purposes being held criminally responsible for putting profit above the common good of humankind? Or maybe, just SWAT them? Works for me! Yak Yak Yak: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZuxPKUVGiw Laws != morality As the first comment on the YT video says, "this couldn't be a more relevant song." Yak Yak Yak: Right, using solar for generating electricity removes more carbon emissions than using liquefied natural gas, especially in Hawai'i which has ample solar resources, and no local LNG resources. What's your confusion? No confusion at all. Just 15-20 years pissed away that if it had been done back then, would have made a dent in the overall problem. Yak Yak Yak: The "how to avoid a scam" information is both timeless and relevant to Puna - helps to actually read and watch it. Leilanidude is the one that accused "you invented old people that you help out?" You ok? I am perfectly fine. Watched and read all your dated links and videos, and yet, none of them deal specifically with Puna or YOUR offering to help. And silly me, I must have confused what you meant when you said, "I'm not addicted to making up fantasies to avoid dealing with reality that many in your generation seem so prone for, I just get to call it like I sees it." Yak Yak Yak: Take the blue pill? I am quite sure you have overlapping prescriptions. Yak Yak Yak: Think the Karen thing is actually a younger boomer thing, but maybe some older genXers - everyone is on the spectrum after all. But Rob is too cool for that - having discovered Haight-Ashbury in '65 and seen Hendrix's last show at the Isle of Wight, he'll probably stay groovy no matter. Actually, I stand corrected. The whole Karen thing was more of a millennial generation invention used to describe the Gen-X and boomer generation. I'm sure however, that Rob was and still is the true tie died hippy dude! And a boomer too! How about that! I'd also venture to say, his webmaster is in any generational category EXCEPT that of a boomer. Yak Yak Yak: Um, you posting while "happy, sad, ill, angry, hungry, drunk, stoned or simultaneously watching Sponge Bob."? Of course, Yak! How else can one stand to be in a room with a Gen-Xer unless they are "happy, sad, ill, angry, hungry, drunk, (and) stoned" while you constantly try to turn off the TV channel of Sponge Bob so you can go in and out of the Matrix? And besides, everyone knows when you have no more tools in your debate bucket, immediately throw out the "must be drunk and stoned" reference. Always a winner for you hey? RE: Upgrade? And other Hi-Tech Scams - randomq - 03-26-2026 ironyak, wow, that description for LCS, you're right it did age well! If we're going all the way back it would be playing Adventure on the Atari 2600, and Oregon Trail on an Apple II in school for me. And technically my first LAN game would have been "Midi Maze" on the Atari. (Amiga ended up being a way better system overall, but the Atari ST did have its dual MIDI ports going for it, which of course was for instruments, but could also work like a token ring network). *looks around in a haze* Wait, is the upgrade still not done? How long have we been talking? |
