RE: Sleepers and One Hit Wonders - JerryCarr - 08-03-2008 "Uncle Jack," "Mechanical World," and "Got a Line on You" are also great Spirit songs. We thought it was way cool that one of them had a shaved head in the era of long-haired rockers. Cheers, Jerry RE: Sleepers and One Hit Wonders - oink - 08-04-2008 An under appreciated great artist: Randy Newman http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGO42gvCSPI&feature=related Pua`a S. Yes Kathy those are some fine memories. Wonder if we were at the Monterey Bay Festival 1965 or 66 at the same time?? Oh "A Whiter Shade of Pale" Procol Harum my favorite! Another favorite, they are all favorites I think, LOL as I just love music, especially live music, oh is Mason Willians "CLASSICAL Gas"!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mguzKze1sYo If I could only play one song on the piano it would be Classical Gas! How about Ravi Shankar, OH so many. Thanks all! mella l RE: Sleepers and One Hit Wonders - dirk1609 - 08-04-2008 Chris Smither is by far my favorite find. A few year's back we were in a brew pub in Hood River, OR. They were playing a CD I'd never heard before but LOVED. I asked the bar tender who it was, and was told it was Chris Smither. I imediately went out and bought a CD and now have everything of his I've been able to find. Here's a link to one of his songs off youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zgxNU9YHTZw RE: Sleepers and One Hit Wonders - Kapohocat - 08-04-2008 quote: WOW havent heard that name in awhile! I worked at a concert hall when he played there! Okay here is not a sleeper or definately the opposite of one hit wonders but I suggest seeing "Standing in the Shadows of Motown". It is a 2 CD documentary about the studio musicians that received hardly any recognition for their music yet they were the Motown sound! And anything by Trini Lopez. RE: Sleepers and One Hit Wonders - Rob Tucker - 08-04-2008 I have that DVD. It's about the Funk Bros. It's a great show!! Got it in a $5 bin at Walmart. It's a shame what that implies. RE: Sleepers and One Hit Wonders - Dennis - 08-04-2008 We were sitting around yesterday listening to Hawaiian music and my wife asked me if I could ask what the Hawaiian word "Kapu'ana" means. Thanks! Dennis RE: Sleepers and One Hit Wonders - Menehune - 08-04-2008 quote: It appears there is no specific translation for just "Kapu'ana" - it is normally spoken in the phrase"Ha'ina ia mai ana ka puana". Answer taken from another source: "It's "Ha'ina ia mai ana ka puana", and it's a traditional ending to Hawaiian songs, though it's often abbreviated. The meaning is "So let the story be told..." and it will be followed by the subject of the song. It hearkens back to the time when the only transmission of verbal was through chant. If the chant was not repeated by the hearer, it would be lost" On topic - The Brothers Johnson and "Strawberry Letter 23". Their album "Right on Time" is the best FUNK ever! IMHO! RE: Sleepers and One Hit Wonders - JonP - 08-04-2008 Wow. Four pages and no mention of the best of modern r&r. I go as far back as most of y'all. Radiohead It's the real deal. |
