RE: The Labor has begun on my House - Carey - 12-13-2006 Chili, do you want to borrow a digital camera for this (would save $$ on processing) + we are on your way up & down (just off Old Volcano in Beautiful Downtown Keaau - 1 block down from the Puna Mission) Aloha, Carey RE: The Labor has begun on my House - Chili - 12-13-2006 Thanks Carey. It would be quicker putting pics online. And save me some $$'s. I made 2 trips up to the lot yesterday. After they finished the floor, 2 walls went up. I got quite a bit on video and 7 pics on the disposable. They said they probably would not be back before Friday or Monday. Other jobs pending I guess. They said something about letting the concrete cure a little longer before adding lumber. The roof joists are at the site so I'm going to assume when they get back the 2 other walls and the roof will go up. Things are moving right along now so I'm just going to go with the flow and take my pics and marvel at the progress being made. I sat and watched the workers for hours. Each one doing something different but at the same time it's all being done to conclude that portion of the project to be completed. I was fasinated with just sitting and watching them as they each went about their tasks. When they shut down the compresser for their power tools and began cleaning up the site and putting things away, I brought out the cooler full of cold ones and told them Thanks and enjoy. Then I left and drove home to show Charlie (my son) the pictures I had captured on our video camera. He was totally excited and wants to go up and walk on the floor this Friday. So, even though my gas tank is getting precariously low, once again I will trudge back up to show him his new house on Friday. We get out of life......What we put into it RE: The Labor has begun on my House - wyatt - 12-14-2006 Looks great Chili. Glad to see your progress. Keep posting. The digi cam will make posting far easier. Have fun. Aloha Wyatt RE: The Labor has begun on my House - Chili - 12-15-2006 Thanks Wyatt. A little Xmas birdie told me Santa would be bringing a digital camera my way. By the way, I checked out your pics and all say is, "WOW". Great job. We get out of life......What we put into it RE: The Labor has begun on my House - Chili - 12-22-2006 Went up to the site with my son and better half yesterday. The outer walls were all up and the inner walls were too. I was disapointed to find out they had only been on my job 2 days since the previous Wednesday. I had expected to see all of the roof joists as well as the 4x8 plywood covering it. Since my contracter told me they would be working 5 days aweek from last week on, on my house, it was disheartening to find out only 2 days were put in. That said, I dropped off the film at Long's and it should be getting posted today, tomorrow at the outside. Till then, Aloha and Merrie Xmas to all, Chili We get out of life......What we put into it Edited by - chili on 12/23/2006 15:22:45 RE: The Labor has begun on my House - Kapohocat - 12-22-2006 Maybe he figured 5 guys at 2 days is same as 2 guys @ 5 days... or maybe boom truck wasnt available for trusses if you have them? Just a thought....... Edited by - kapohocat on 12/22/2006 09:46:04 RE: The Labor has begun on my House - Carey - 12-22-2006 Chili, On the bright side, this gives you more than a whole weekend to check that all of the walls are square & plumb (it takes time, and many contractors don't mind being a little off, but a little off can be a pain in the backside for flooring & trim....and later for decorating & stuff) If you haven't told off your contractor, you might just want to thank him for giving you the oppurtunity to check all of the walls, and that you will tag all of the ones that are not true for his crew to true up the walls. If it is done nicely, but with the expectation that he will correct any non-true walls, he might be inspired to not leave you a lot of time to check his work in the future. Most of all, Peace, as next year you should be celebrating in your new house (and the little one weeks here and there, although irritating beyond all beleif now, will not even be remembered!) FL Islander to be RE: The Labor has begun on my House - Chili - 12-23-2006 Well, as it turned out, the crane wasen't available until next Tuesday morning at 7am. I'm so glad I had a chance to calm down and not say something that might have put a rift between my contractor and myself. When he called me back, I was eating lunch with Bob Lamont and Theo at a restaurant in Keaau. So instead of putting my foot in my mouth, I told him what a great job it looked like they were doing and asked when he would be back on the job. That's when he told me the crane was the problem why they hadn't gotten the roof up, but that it was going to be there Tuesday morning to raise the roof joists. For all of us out here who know very little of all the workings of erecting a house, this is turning out to be quite the eye-opener. And the suggestion of checking the plumb and squareness of the house is an excellent idea. I'll be going back up this weekend to do this. Meamwhile, here are the photos of the framed walls inside and outside of the house. http://new.photos.yahoo.com/hilochili I think I won't be quite so quick to rush to judgement in the future on this project. I'm finding that what I don't know about building a house could fill volumes. Besides, no matter how long this takes, or how many setbacks it incurs, down the road awaits our dream coming true. I think I'll just slow back down and lighten up and go with the flow.
