RE: Gardeners Cooperative? - pslamont - 05-04-2008 I will of course roll with whatever develops, but my thought is that we will never know what is going to be available from week to week, so setting a predetermined trade value isn't going to be easy. I want to see the veggies before I decide how many eggs I am willing to give for them. My bread can bring a bundle unless there are six other people with bread. Supply and demand will guide this project one way or another. Also, timing. When I am ready to go home I may just want to get rid of my stuff. I understand what you are saying but we are all friends here and I don't see any hard haggling going on. It would be more like... "Oh, fresh eggs. I have greenbeans and lettuce; wanna trade?" I dunno... guess we will see how it goes. ![]() Pam Just another day in P A R A D I S E !! RE: Gardeners Cooperative? - Guest - 05-04-2008 I'm curious to see what Awa would get. RE: Gardeners Cooperative? - JWFITZ - 05-05-2008 I'd like at this point as it looks like it's going to happen to try to get some sense of the types and quantities of what people are trying to produce. To make sense of the issue, talk in terms of "meals worth" rather than pounds or whatever you're likely to produce. For example, a meals worth of bok choi might be a pound and a half, but basil might be 1 10th of a lb. For myself, I've focused on greens, cabbages, snow peas, and bush beans. I expect 50 or so "meals" of each in the by the end of July. If there's demand for that, I'll put in more, as it's hardly a problem. I'm trying tomatoes, but we'll see. I'd like to see tomatoes, herbs of all sorts in quantities. If that comes easy to you throw in another pack of seeds for me. Count me in! I haven't had any luck with greens or tomatoes - so far - but herbs really like it here and are thriving. Even though I'll be gone for a month, I don't think they're going to quit and will most likely be very ready to harvest when I get back at the end of June, and then throughout the summer. I've got basil, oregano, rosemary in abundance. Parsley, thyme, chayote just coming on; there will likely be extra for trade later. And I'll be planting more when I get back from Idaho, of course. Very interested in garlic, if anyone can plant extra. (Something gets to mine every time so far.) And we can always use oranges, bananas, pineapple, etc, even papaya & avos until our trees get bigger. :-) aloha, Liz "The best things in life aren't things." RE: Gardeners Cooperative? - Carolann R - 05-05-2008 I did not check out this thread previously, but we are so into this! We talked about it on the drive home - this very coop subject. I said it would be great to have a "barter" system for veggies and even if someone who makes soap or other products wants to get veggies and barter their soap...that would be awesome. Would be nice to set up a point system of sorts...Great idea. We just planted some trees, but that will be a couple of years really. Both our Avos are having their very first fruiting this year and we have a small tangerine tree. We are planning to set up a make-shift greenhouse of sorts so we can do tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, etc...this is right up our alley! If you're a vegan type, please don't ask how its done. But, if someone had a supply of goats milk it's a possibility.
